With Curryβs league season finishing three weeks prior, anticipation had been building ahead of the League Knockout Cup Final, a fantastic achievement for the club and they went into the game as underdogs up against Premier Division Champions, Wembdon.
Curry were up for it, cheered on by strong support in the stands, it was a fast start. The first half saw us have the best of the chances, with the midfield winning their battles and combining well with the attack - Trowell going close on a couple of occasions. Wembdon were restricted to half chances with the Curry defence holding strong, despite challenging hot and bright conditions making it hard to read the aerial balls.
The best chance of the half came right at the end of it, a cross fired in from the right, Holland coming close to applying the finishing touch, Cuthbert was following in at the back post but his effort came off the underside of the bar to keep the score a stalemate at half time.
In the second half Wembdon improved to make the game more even, with great goalkeeping on display at both ends, it felt like this one was destined to go all the way. But with just over 20 minutes to play, Wembdon sent in a cross and the forward climbed over the Curry defender to nod them ahead. It was a significant blow for Curry but testament to their fighting spirit shown throughout this competition, they fought straight back, attacking play followed by a high press forced the Wembdon defender to put it into his own net and level the scores.
With about 5 minutes left on the clock a whipped Wembdon corner went all the way through and into the net to give the Bridgwater based side the lead again. Curry did what they could to try and level it up once more but this time Wembdon held strong and the final whistle went.
A 2-1 loss on the day in a game that could truly have gone either way. The Curry players were understandably disappointed not to pull off the upset, but it was a great effort to get runners up and push the winners of the division above right to the wire - that achievement and effort on the day was recognised by an impressive amount of Curry fans who applauded the players off the pitch.
