Resets & pauses⏳
Taking time to reset, or putting brief pauses into longer combinations, can give you the opportunity to make use of shots that don’t otherwise seem to flow.
The advantage of this being that it breaks the rhythm and potentially gives your target something outside of the norm to have to deal with. In general, taking pauses during offensive breaks gives you time to make the ideal shot selection whilst continuing to control the pace and conserve energy. Once you have your opponent on the back foot, they have to work to come forward and regain space / control - especially in a ring where ropes dictate movement options. Taking a pause at such a time isn’t succumbing to inactivity, but rather prolonging a position of advantage.
Resetting to change the flow of a combination/ break the rhythm doesn’t have to take long. In the above clip, a second is long enough to reset his position and redistribute his weight from the back foot, so that the lead hook can be used smoothly after a roll onto the back foot 👌🏽
