The curtain came down on another memorable season for the Swifts this week, with both teams ending their campaigns on a high. The Seconds wrapped things up on Saturday with a superb comeback victory, while the Firsts followed suit last night with a hard-fought win over Cooke to ensure the season ended with smiles rather than frustration.

The Seconds officially finish 3rd in Reserve Division 2, narrowly missing out on the promotion places by just two points, while the Firsts currently sit 3rd in Division 1 but could still drop to 4th depending on the final remaining fixture, with Abbey Villa travelling to Newtown Forest needing a result to leapfrog us. Regardless of where the final standings settle, both teams can look back on seasons packed with progress, resilience, goals and togetherness.

Seconds Finish Strong with Stunning Comeback

The Seconds signed off in style with a brilliant comeback victory after finding themselves 2-0 down inside the opening 11 minutes. It would have been easy for heads to drop, but this side has shown all season that they are never out of a game.

Fergal pulled one back before half-time to set up an exciting second period and continued his excellent finish to the campaign. The striker has now scored 5 goals in his last 7 appearances, while also providing a couple of assists for John Hanna in the second half as the Swifts turned the game around in style.

John would go on to complete his fourth hat-trick of the season, securing another victory and wrapping up the Reserve Division 2 Golden Boot with a phenomenal 26 league goals in 20 games. The player-manager has been nothing short of sensational all year, but the squad around him deserves enormous credit too.

From the outset of the season there has been a real togetherness around the Seconds. Every player who has pulled on the shirt has contributed to what has been a hugely impressive first full season under John and Paul’s leadership. The side finished just two points short of promotion whilst scoring an incredible 81 league goals, averaging more than four per game.

Big wins over Millisle II, Queen’s Grads IV and Corrymeela II showcased the attacking quality throughout the squad, while battling displays against top opposition in league and Tommy Murphy action showed the resilience and character within the group. Massive credit must also go to “Duracell Bunny” skipper Davey Brown, whose relentless energy and commitment helped drive standards all season long.

Everyone connected to the club is hugely excited to see what this free-scoring side can achieve next year.

Firsts Finish with Hard-Fought Cooke Victory

The Firsts brought their Division 1 season to a close with a deserved 3-2 victory over Cooke, gaining a measure of revenge after throwing away a 3-1 lead against the same opposition just three weeks earlier.

The Swifts started brightly and took the lead thanks to yet another clinical Monty finish after excellent work from McGreevy and Weeksy. Since arriving at the club, the forward has settled superbly and has quickly become one of the most dangerous attacking players in the division.

Cooke equalised after what appeared to be a handball in the build-up, though the referee was unsighted and the goal stood. The lads responded well and regained the lead through a fortunate Marley free-kick which somehow beat the stranded keeper, who may well have been hampered by the low evening sun.

At 2-1 up at the break, hopes were high of kicking on in the second half, but Cooke levelled again after Kirky produced an excellent initial save only for the rebound to loop awkwardly into the net off Beavis despite our Number 1’s desperate attempts to claw it away.

The decisive moment arrived in fitting fashion. Fresh from sealing the Reserve Division 2 Golden Boot, John Hanna entered the action for his first appearance for the Firsts this season and immediately made an impact with several strong possessions and challenges that lifted the side. When the ball dropped to him outside the area, it almost felt written in the stars — an excellent first touch set him perfectly before he rifled a powerful effort beyond the despairing keeper to restore the lead.

Davey Brown was then introduced and slotted seamlessly in at right back as the Swifts comfortably saw the game out to finish the campaign on a winning note. All over the pitch the game management was fantastic and showed that finally a little bit of footballing maturity has kicked in. The presence of MOTM Conor settled everyone around him and despite "retiring" two seasons ago, he is still a huge part of the club. With stepson Michael breaking through this year, everyone will be hoping that Conor keeps turning up next year - particularly given the huge void Daris' departure will leave.

There is plenty to be proud of for the Firsts this season. After losing key players before a ball was kicked, many outside the club questioned whether we could compete consistently at this level. Yet the squad regrouped magnificently and climbed the table to secure at minimum a top-four finish while remaining competitive in virtually every game outside of one difficult afternoon in Millisle.

The performances against the top two may ultimately explain why we fell short of a promotion challenge, but the progress made across the campaign has been huge. Big wins against Bangor YM III, Holywood III, Bloomfield III and Ballyhalbert, alongside consistently competitive performances against strong opposition, suggest there is a very solid platform to build from heading into next season.

Final Word

Manager Nev’s end-of-season message to the squad summed things up perfectly. Reflecting on the campaign, he admitted he had “loved nearly every minute of it” and reminded the lads of something Kirky said right at the start of the season — “it’s a marathon, not a sprint.”

After a difficult opening to the campaign and plenty of setbacks along the way, many people outside the club had written the Firsts off early. Yet the squad regrouped brilliantly and climbed the table to secure a minimum top-four finish, something Nev admitted “a lot of people thought was impossible.”

Nev also confirmed both he and assistant Andy are fully committed to next season, telling the players: “We don’t stand still — we move forward.” That feeling of momentum and belief is clear throughout the club.

The "retired" Conor described this season as potentially an even greater achievement than the previous title-winning year, pointing to the incredible turnaround after the difficult start and the consistency shown across the second half of the campaign. In his first season at the club, Emmet praised the commitment shown by the management team through every condition imaginable, while Daris himself admitted that “99%” of the reason he delayed his move away was because of the Swifts and the dressing room environment built within the club.

A special mention must go to First Team captain Daris, who now departs for Liverpool for a year and potentially Manchester after that. Having arrived as a “shy and modest” youngster, he somehow leaves with a mouth nearly as big as his talent and an ego to match. Thankfully, he backs it up.

Technically, Daris has always been one of the most gifted players the club has ever seen, but season by season he added the bite, steel and leadership needed to dominate at Division 1 level. The armband transformed him into a different beast this year. It has also been great to see him finally begin attending training regularly — even if Aquinas staff remain on tenterhooks every time he lashes a ball toward the electrical switch box in frustration.

Off the pitch, Daris has been a massive part of the club too. Whether supporting fundraisers, social events or helping out wherever needed, he has always thrown himself fully into club life. He leaves with everyone’s love and support, but very clear in the knowledge that he will never officially be released or transferred. Every trip home will undoubtedly involve Nev trying to tap him up into pulling on the black and white once again.

From Kirky’s early-season reminder about patience, to Nev’s unwavering belief, to the players publicly backing one another right through to the final whistle — this season has shown exactly what this club is about.

A huge thank you to every player, manager, supporter, volunteer and sponsor who contributed throughout the campaign.

The club doesn’t stand still.
We move forward.

Up the Swifts 🖤🤍

Match Previews: Season Nears Climax for Both Sides

With just two games remaining, both teams head into crucial fixtures knowing exactly what’s required. The Firsts continue their push for a top-four finish, while the Seconds are still chasing down 3rd place — but with little room left for error, every moment now matters.

Firsts vs 43rd Dundonald (Away)

The Firsts travel to 43rd Dundonald looking to get back to winning ways after a frustrating couple of results. The narrow 2–0 defeat to Willowfield showed once again how competitive the side can be against top opposition, but also highlighted the fine margins — particularly defensively — that have separated us from the very top teams this season.

That frustration was compounded in the following game against Cooke, where a strong performance looked set to deliver all three points before a last-minute equaliser turned it into just one. It’s been a recurring theme — competitive displays, but not always the reward to match.

There have been plenty of positives to draw on, however. Big results like the 12–0 win over Bangor YM III, along with victories over sides around us such as Holywood and Bloomfield, show the level this team can reach when everything clicks. With the table still tight and just two games to go, the objective is clear — win both and give ourselves the best possible chance of finishing positively in 4th place.

Seconds vs 3rd Bangor II

The Seconds face a huge test as they take on 3rd Bangor II, with the promotion picture now clearer following midweek results. Bangor have already secured second place and promotion, but there is still plenty riding on this game for the Swifts.

Thursday night’s 2-2 draw with Ballygowan II — rescued by a last-minute Cameron equaliser — summed up the recent run: battling, competitive, but just lacking that extra edge to consistently turn performances into wins. Prior to that, the outstanding 8–0 victory over Millisle II showed just how dangerous this side can be going forward, while narrow defeats and draws against strong teams have often come down to small moments.

The equation is simple now. With two games left, the Swifts are still in the hunt for 3rd place, but will need maximum points in the final two games. Having already pushed Bangor extremely close recently, there is belief that this is a game we can compete in — but it will require concentration, discipline and clinical finishing at key moments.

Final Word

Two games to go.
Plenty still to play for.

The Firsts aim to lock down 4th, while the Seconds push for a strong finish and a shot at 3rd. If the season so far has shown anything, it’s that both sides are more than capable — now it’s about finishing on a high.

Match Preview: Seconds vs Ballygowan II
📍 Billy Neill | ⏰ 6:30pm Kick-Off

The Seconds are back in action tonight as they take on Ballygowan II at Billy Neill, knowing that this is a must-win fixture in the context of the run-in. With games running out and the table tightening, there’s little margin for error if the lads are to keep their promotion hopes alive.

Last Thursday’s meeting between the sides is still fresh in the memory. Despite a very competitive first half — going in just 3–2 down — the Swifts struggled to cope with a Ballygowan side stacked with First Team players, eventually falling to a 6–2 defeat. It was a game that highlighted how fine the margins can be, particularly in these midweek fixtures where availability and squad depth often play a huge role.

However, the response on Saturday could not have been more emphatic. Facing Millisle II, the lads produced one of their performances of the season with an outstanding 8–0 victory, despite only having two substitutes available. John set the tone early with a brace, while Phelim, Cameron and Jason Brennan added to a dominant first-half display. Paul Sherman made it six shortly after the break, before Fergal grabbed another from the bench and Brennan completed his brace in injury time. That result not only boosted confidence but also tightened things up in the table — leaving us just one point behind Millisle II in 4th (with two extra games to play) and two points off Cloughey II in 3rd, who have completed their fixtures.

Tonight’s opponents sit just one point behind us, albeit having played a game more, which only adds to the importance of this clash. Despite a patchy run in recent weeks, the bigger picture still offers real encouragement. Second place remains mathematically achievable, with Bangor II currently nine points ahead but with just one game remaining — against us this Saturday — and both sides sitting on the same goal difference.

But there’s no looking too far ahead just yet.

Final Word
It’s simple — tonight has to come first.
A win keeps the pressure on, sets up Saturday perfectly, and keeps the promotion dream alive.
Get down if you can and back the lads — big night, big game, big opportunity.

Match Previews: Key Games as the Run-In Heats Up

With both sides deep into the final stretch of the season, recent results — good and bad — are starting to shape what’s still possible. There have been big wins, narrow defeats and a few frustrating “what if” moments, and this weekend offers another opportunity to turn performances into points.
________________________________________

Firsts vs Cooke Athletic

The Firsts welcome Cooke off the back of a mixed but largely encouraging run. Recent results have included four league wins on the bounce prior to Willowfield, a hard-fought 2–1 win away to Holywood, and a dominant 12–0 victory over Bangor YM III, showing just how dangerous the side can be when everything clicks. Even in defeat last time out against Willowfield, the performance was competitive, with the game still in the balance before key moments — including a disallowed goal late on — went against us.

Cooke arrive in strong form themselves. After a dreadful start (losing 10 of their first 11), they’ve turned things around with five wins, two draws and one defeat in their last eight, including results against teams at the top end of the table. That suggests their current 9th place position is misleading, and this will be another tough test against a side full of confidence.

Looking back at previous encounters adds a bit of edge to this one. Cooke lead the head-to-head 3–1, though the Swifts’ last win — a 2–1 Sittlington Cup victory — showed what’s possible on the day. The memory of that narrow Frank Moore final defeat still lingers too, underlining how tight games between the sides tend to be.

From a Swifts perspective, the aim will be to rediscover the attacking sharpness
shown in recent wins while tightening up defensively — something highlighted again in the Willowfield defeat, where not dealing with key moments proved costly. With the race for 3rd and 4th still alive, and teams around us dropping points, this is a real opportunity to stay right in the mix heading into the final games.

Seconds vs Millisle II

The Seconds come into this one off the back of a challenging run, but one that still shows how competitive this side is. Recent results include the 3–2 defeat to Bangor II, where the game was level at 2–2 before a controversial penalty decided it, and the 6–2 loss to Ballygowan II, which was far tighter than the scoreline suggests after a 3–2 half-time score in a very even first half. Prior to that, there had been strong attacking displays, including a 6–1 win over Queen’s Grads IV and a 4–1 victory over Ballynafeigh in the Tommy Murphy, so the quality is clearly there.

Millisle II will be well aware of that, particularly after the Swifts’ 5–2 win earlier in the season, one of the standout performances of the campaign. However, recent form suggests this will be a very different test. The Seconds have found games against stronger opposition tougher in recent weeks, with small lapses proving costly, while Millisle have continued to pick up points and sit just ahead in the table.

The key theme in recent games has been fine margins. Against Bangor, a single decision and moment changed the outcome. Against Ballygowan, a strong first half showing wasn’t backed up after the break. Turning those moments in our favour will be crucial here — particularly against a direct rival in the standings.
With games in hand still to come, the opportunity to climb the table remains very real. But as recent results have shown, there’s little room for error. A win here would not only close the gap on Millisle but also reset momentum heading into the final run, where consistency will define how high this group can finish.
________________________________________

Final Word

Plenty of positives in recent weeks, but also clear areas to sharpen up.
Both games offer a chance to build on strong performances and correct recent frustrations. With the season nearing its conclusion, every point matters — get down and support the lads if you can, and hopefully we’ll be back in the Parador talking about two big results 🍻

Match Report: Seconds Fall to Ballygowan II in Difficult Second Half

The Seconds were beaten 6–2 by Ballygowan II on a night that promised plenty early on but ultimately slipped away after the break. It was a frantic start, with the Swifts conceding, equalising and then falling behind again inside the opening seven minutes in what could only be described as a chaotic opening spell. Marley — the only regular First Team player involved for the Swifts compared to seven on the opposition — reacted quickest to fire home from close range and bring things level, settling the early nerves.

Despite going 2–1 down, the Swifts responded well and worked their way back into the contest. Around the 20-minute mark, John was brought down in the box and stepped up to confidently dispatch the penalty, bringing the sides level once again and taking his tally to an impressive 21 league goals for the season. At that stage, it felt like the Swifts had weathered the early storm and could take control. However, just before the break, Ballygowan regained the lead as the experienced Gordon Leckey rose highest to power home a header, leaving the Swifts 3–2 down at half-time despite a competitive showing.

The second half proved far more challenging. Ballygowan’s experience and quality — particularly with several First Team regulars involved — began to show as they took control of the game. Further goals in the 61st, 65th and 80th minutes extended their lead and ultimately put the result beyond doubt. While the scoreline looks heavy, it doesn’t fully reflect the effort in the first half, where the Swifts more than held their own.

There’s little time to dwell, however, with another big game immediately on the horizon. Attention now turns to Millisle II, who sit four points ahead in the race for third. A positive result there would not only restore momentum but also provide a real boost ahead of the return fixture against Ballygowan — where the aim will be to produce a much more evenly matched contest.

Match Preview: Seconds in Midweek Action Again at Moat Park

The Seconds are straight back into action tonight with a 6:30pm kick-off against Ballygowan II, as the fixtures continue to come thick and fast in the final weeks of the season. After the narrow 3–2 defeat away to Bangor II at the weekend, there’s little time to dwell, with an immediate opportunity to respond against a side sitting just behind us in the table.

Ballygowan come into this one one point behind and two places back, although the Swifts still hold two games in hand, making this a key fixture in shaping the run-in. Both sides have hit a bit of a sticky patch, with the Swifts winning just one of their last six and Ballygowan one in their last seven. This run for the Seconds hasn’t quite reflected performances, but highlights the importance of turning fine margins into results. Games have remained competitive, but moments at both ends of the pitch have proven decisive.

Recent meetings suggest this could be another tight encounter. The Swifts have won the last three head-to-heads, but Ballygowan had previously taken the three before that, underlining just how evenly matched these sides have been over the past couple of seasons. It’s a fixture that rarely lacks intensity, and with both teams needing points for different reasons, there’s little doubt tonight will follow a similar pattern.

From a Swifts perspective, the focus will be on rediscovering the consistency that drove the strong run earlier in the campaign — particularly in attack, where the side has shown it can be as dangerous as anyone in the division. With games in hand still to play and the table tightly packed, a win tonight would not only steady recent form but also keep the pressure on those above heading into the final stretch.

Match Reports: Competitive Displays but Narrow Defeats

Firsts vs Willowfield Parish 10th OB (H)

The Firsts were beaten 2–0 by Willowfield at Moat Park in another competitive encounter where, ultimately, the difference in quality at key moments proved decisive. The result sees Willowfield move one point clear at the top, ahead of a crucial fixture against Newtown Forest, and given that we have now lost all four meetings with the top two this season, there can be no real complaints about not being in the promotion race. That said, the margins in those games have often been fine, and there is plenty to take into next season as the club looks to mount a stronger challenge.

The visitors started the brighter, applying early pressure with the movement of their left winger and forward causing problems. It was that winger who opened the scoring, gliding in unopposed to finish a floated ball — a goal that could have been prevented both at the source and in tracking the run. Despite this, the Swifts grew into the game and, without creating many clear-cut chances, were well in contention at 1–0 down at half-time. The second goal came just four minutes after the restart, with the same winger involved, winning a flick-on from a long throw which allowed their number 8 to nod home from close range. Again, being second best to the first and second balls proved costly.

Breaking down a well-organised Willowfield back line was a challenge throughout, and their defensive record — just 14 goals conceded in 17 games — reflects that solidity, particularly when compared to our own tally of 40 conceded. That gap underlines where improvements are needed across the pitch. However, there was a strong finish from the Swifts, with the final 15 minutes played largely in the opposition half. The ball even found the net when a trademark Beavis long throw caused panic and Monty appeared to force it over the line, only for the referee to rule it out for a perceived foul — a decision that might have set up a tense finale had it stood. With three games remaining, there is still an outside chance of finishing 3rd or 4th, and given the changes in personnel and the early-season form, either position would represent a solid return.

Seconds vs Bangor II (A)

The Seconds were narrowly beaten 3–2 by second-placed 3rd Bangor II, in a game that saw them respond well on multiple occasions but ultimately fall just short. Looking for a reaction after a disappointing previous outing, the Swifts started brightly, with Hanna going close early on. Bangor settled into the game and took the lead following a defensive mix-up that allowed their winger through to finish. The Swifts responded well, with Phil seeing an effort ricochet back to him before he finished calmly to make it 1–1, but the hosts regained the lead seven minutes later as a cross from the left wasn’t dealt with and their striker headed past Ashwood to make it 2–1 at half-time.

The message at the break was clear — stay composed and take chances — and the Swifts did just that early in the second half. A long throw caused problems, and after a half-clearance fell kindly, Phil was again on hand to finish, his effort slipping under the keeper to make it 2–2. With both sides pushing for a winner, the game opened up, but it was Bangor who found the decisive moment. A looping ball to the back post — which looked marginal at best — saw Ashwood attempt to punch clear, making contact with the attacker, and the referee pointed to the spot. Bangor converted to make it 3–2, and despite the Swifts’ efforts, there were no clear chances to force an equaliser late on.

The result leaves Bangor nine points clear (and two ahead on goal difference), though the Swifts still hold three games in hand, including a return fixture in ten days’ time which could prove pivotal. While defeat is frustrating, the performance showed resilience and attacking threat, and with the run-in approaching, turning these tight games into positive results will be key if the Seconds are to climb the table in the closing weeks of the season.

Match Previews: Big Tests, Tight Tables and No Shortage of Storylines

After a run of mixed results, both sides face significant tests this weekend against high-quality opposition as the season enters its final stretch. Despite a season of stop-start momentum thanks to weather, cup fixtures and the odd chaos-filled afternoon, both sides now head into a crucial weekend with plenty still on the line. With only a handful of games remaining, there’s no hiding place — and no better time to put a run together.

Firsts vs Willowfield Parish 10th OB (H) – Moat Park

The Firsts welcome Willowfield to Moat Park for the second meeting between the sides in recent weeks, looking to build on a strong run of league form and take another step towards the top end of the table. The previous encounter at Orangefield was a tight contest for long periods before slipping away, and that will serve as both a reminder and a source of motivation heading into this one.

Willowfield arrive sitting 2nd in the league, eight points clear of the Swifts in 5th, with both sides having played the same number of games and just four remaining. Their +39 goal difference highlights their quality at both ends, although the Swifts’ own +24 shows the attacking threat is very much there — the key difference being the 24 extra goals conceded, something that has proven costly across the season. Those dropped points — three draws and four defeats — are a source of frustration given how competitive the side has been in most games, particularly against top opposition.

There is still plenty to play for. The Swifts sit just one point behind Ballygowan in 3rd (with a game in hand) and level on games with Abbey Villa Development in 4th, meaning a positive result here could significantly tighten things heading into the final run-in. Recent wins, including the emphatic victory over Bangor YM III, show what this side is capable of when it clicks. The challenge now is to produce that level against one of the strongest teams in the division and prove that progress is being made where it matters most.

Contextually, this fixture also represents a chance to correct some of the fine margins that have defined the season. In several games against top opposition, the Firsts have been well in contention deep into matches before key moments — often small lapses in concentration or game management — have proven decisive. Turning those moments into positives rather than setbacks will be crucial, particularly against a side as clinical and consistent as Willowfield.

With just four games remaining, the table is beginning to tighten in a way that keeps multiple outcomes alive. A win here would not only close the gap on Willowfield but also apply pressure across the teams immediately above, especially with several of those sides still to play each other. Momentum at this stage of the season can be decisive, and back-to-back strong performances could quickly shift the narrative from frustration to opportunity.

Seconds vs Bangor II (A) – Bangor Sportsplex

The Seconds make the trip to the Sportsplex to face 3rd-placed Bangor II in what is shaping up to be a crucial game in the race for the top end of the table. The hosts currently sit 2nd, six points clear of the Swifts in 5th, but with the Swifts holding three games in hand, the table doesn’t tell the full story.

Interestingly, both sides boast an identical +30 goal difference, though the Swifts have both scored and conceded more across their 14 games — a reflection of their attacking strength but also the fine margins that have cost them at times this season. Recent results suggest a slight dip, with just one win in the last five across league and Tommy Murphy action, so this feels like a key moment to turn that form back in the right direction.

The head-to-head adds another layer. The Swifts dominated this fixture in previous seasons with four consecutive wins, but last year saw a complete reversal, with Bangor taking all three meetings in league and cup. With six games remaining and ground to make up, the equation is simple — start turning performances into results. A win here would not only close the gap but send a strong message heading into the final weeks of the campaign.

Looking at the wider picture, the Seconds’ season has been shaped by both impressive attacking output and the challenge of maintaining consistency. Heavy wins in recent weeks highlighted the ceiling of this group, but tighter contests have exposed the need for greater control in key moments. Against a side sitting above them, those details will be even more important.

The games in hand remain a significant factor, but they only hold value if converted into points. This fixture offers an immediate opportunity to begin that process against direct competition. With several of the teams above still to play each other, a positive result here could quickly shift the table and put the Swifts firmly back in contention as the run-in gathers pace.

Final Word

Two tough tests against sides above us, and two big opportunities to influence how the season finishes.

With league positions tightening and games running out, this is where consistency, discipline and belief become crucial. As always, your support makes a difference — get down, get behind the lads, and hopefully we’ll be reflecting on a strong weekend back at the Parador 🍻
