All Roads lead to Belfast
This week was all about Belfast City Marathon.
Sunday seen the return of Belfast City Marathon and relay, crowds gathered at Stormont from early on taking in the atmosphere and excitement(or nerves) from the thousands of runners who were taking on the challenge of completing 26.2 miles around Belfast, added to the numbers were the thousands of relay runners waiting in anticipation of the starters horn to start leg 1 of their relay race.
The Belfast Marathon route takes in the East, South, West and North of the city, with the start at Stormont estate runners make their way down the Upper Newtownards Rd across the Beersbridge rd before heading up the Castlereagh and turning onto Montgomery Rd and the first relay handover taking a right onto to the Woodstock Rd runners then make their way through Ormeau park onto the Ormeau road and into the City centre making their way along the Donegal Rd towards the Balls on the Falls and Boucher Rd which is leg 3 changeover, from here it's onto the Lisburn rd and into the West of the city along the Andersontown Rd and onto the Falls which is leg 4, taking in the sights, runners make their way up the Springfield Rd and the Shankill, down Crumlin Rd and onto the Waterworks, once through its onto Duncairn and the last of the relay changeovers, once onto the Ormeau embankment and towpath you can see the finish but not before running up the Ormeau Rd, down Ravenhill a quick left onto the Embankment and a kick for home.
Around 23,000 runners left Stormont estate on a tour of the city with one of the closest finishes in the history of the event which saw Abay Alemu win with a time of 2.16.23 with Teadesse Mamo take 2nd with 2.16.24 3rd was Abera Ketima with 2.17.38.
The club had 4 runners take on the challenge with Peter Hamlin first home in a PB time of 3.25.12 he was followed by Ryan Jamison completing his first Marathon with 3.55.13, Curtis Summerville 3.57.34 and Kyle Daly another first timer with 5.31.12, well done Gents.
A massive well done to all our members who ran in the relays, too many to mention.
While all this was going on Coastal Runner Nikki Keery has quietly made her away across the water to take part in the AJ Bell Great Birmingham run.
The 10k and half marathon routes both start in Centenary Square and sweep past standout city landmarks including the Jewellery Quarter, St Paulβs Square, the Mailbox, Grand Central at New Street Station, St Martinβs Church, Southside and Digbeth. Half marathon runners will head into south Birmingham, with the green spaces of Cannon Hill Park and Selly Park and around the famous Edgbaston Stadium, before re-joining the 10k route for a standout finish; past the iconic curves of the Selfridges Building, onto the home straight along Jennens Road, and into Aston Universityβs vibrant event village.
Nikki ran the Half marathon in a time of 2.31.31. Well done.
