Last night I had the pleasure of attending the 50th Anniversary Sports Dinner for St Andrews Colts - a fantastic evening celebrating not just football, but community, commitment, and the people who keep grassroots sport alive.

The night was packed with brilliant football stories, memories, and laughs from an excellent panel of guests:
Willie Miller – legendary former Aberdeen captain who led the club through its most successful era, including European success under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Craig Levein – former Scotland national team manager and highly respected figure in Scottish football management and development.
Leanne Crichton – former Scotland international and now a leading coach, pundit, and advocate for the growth of the women’s game in Scotland.
The evening also featured some fantastic video messages from football legends including Ossie Ardiles and the one and only Kenny Dalglish, which added even more to what was already a memorable night.
But beyond the stories from the stage, what really stood out to me was the pride surrounding the club itself.
For 50 years, St Andrews Colts F.C. has been providing opportunities for young people through football. Today the club runs 10 teams across various age groups — and that simply does not happen by accident.
Behind every training session, every matchday, every fundraiser, every washed kit, every WhatsApp message, and every lift to an away game are committee members, volunteers, and coaches giving up huge amounts of their own time to create opportunities for others.
These are the people who rarely get enough credit.
Grassroots football in Scotland is thriving, but it survives because of dedicated volunteers who care deeply about their clubs and communities. We probably do not say “thank you” to them often enough.
Events like this are an important reminder of what football is really about. Not just trophies or results — but belonging, friendships, development, and community spirit that can last generations.
At Balon Sports, this is exactly the level of football we are passionate about supporting. Grassroots clubs are the heartbeat of the game, and we want to play our part in helping those clubs continue to grow and thrive.
Congratulations again to everyone involved with St Andrews Colts F.C. on reaching such a fantastic milestone — and thank you to every volunteer, coach, and committee member helping keep grassroots football moving forward across Scotland.
