LANCASHIRE CC 2ND XI V MIDDLESEX CC 2ND XI

It rained.... a lot & mid morning with no prospect of play a draw was decided.

There's not really much more to say apart from the weather's definitely not been on our side this week but somehow, in between the downpours, we still managed to witness some high‑quality cricket & it was special to witness Ben play on home turf 🏏💙

A huge thank you to Lancashire and Middlesex players, coaches, scorers, physios, analysts — for sticking with it, cracking set of lads

Massive appreciation to everyone whose helped with logistics etc this week.....

👨‍🍳 Sam who has singlehandedly run our kitchen for four straight days.
✅️Bottomless teas, coffees, waters, soft drinks.
✅️Four days of players lunches and teas.
✅️Spectators fed.
🤷‍♀️Sanity… questionable.
🔋Be gentle with him for the rest of the weekend — his fuse may be slightly shorter than usual 🙈

🚜Mike, who has prepared & marked wickets, wrangled covers and somehow kept the whole thing playable when the sky clearly had other plans.

🌨And to everyone who turned up, again and again — to help with ground maintenance, mopping up, dragging covers on, dragging covers off, and repeating that cycle more times than anyone cares to count… thank you.👏

🍻To Georgia for keeping the bar & drinks flowing, dealing with sams tantrums & providing a shoulder for Mike to cry on every time it started raining ...again 😂

And the best part?
We get to do it all again in two weeks’ time when we host Lancashire U16 v Lincolnshire U16 🙄

Tomorrow..... back to some sort of normality

LANCASHIRE CC 2ND XI V MIDDLESEX CC 2ND XI

Frustrated sums up day 3.

Despite the heroic efforts of Mike and his band of merry men working straight for 2 hours shifting last night’s and this morning’s rainfall off the covers, which was roughly the volume of Sellies baths and then mopping up whatever remained.

The showers kept coming
intermittently but heavy, and by the time lunch arrived, still no play. So the mopping up continued & continued & continued...💧🪣

By late afternoon despite the dryer weather, the decision was finally made.. no play. 🙄

The wicket itself & the square was playable, both umpires  were happy but a 'soft patch' on the bowlers run‑up didn't sit well 🤷‍♀️

However if there’s one thing Newton Sports do well, it’s making the best of a bad day......

Everyone ate...Twice 👨‍🍳

And when the sun finally decided to make an appearance, both Lancashire and Middlesex road‑tested the padel courts, so at least something got a run‑out. 🎾

And the silver lining?

Sam got an early finish on his birthday, meaning his celebrations could start earlier than planned 🍻

So no cricketing pictures today just players enjoying padel & a picture of the Groundsmans step tally for today 🙈👟

Tomorrow we go again... or maybe not 🤔

LANCASHIRE CC 2ND XI V MIDDLESEX CC 2ND XI

Today tried to blow us into the next postcode but the rain got the memo and stayed away so we could enjoy a full day’s play. 🌬💨

As for the cricket… we’d love to give you a ball‑by‑ball breakdown, but we’ve all been running around like minions so a update is the best we can offer.... close of Day 2 Lancashire lead by 81 runs with 6 wickets remaining, we've supplied a wagon wheel for the statisticians 🤣 PS Our Ben's doing us proud on familiar ground & we’ll definitely try to pay more attention tomorrow 🙈

What we did notice was the people regulars, old faces we’ve missed, brand‑new visitors, and even a lovely couple who casually hopped on a train from London just to tick another cricket ground off their list... as you do 😊

And we know we’re biased… but what a fabulous community feel today has had. The kind of day that reminds us why Newton Sports is so special 💙

It may have been weather‑delayed, but when play finally got underway today it was worth the wait.

Its not every day you get England players from Middlesex CC lining up at Newton 👀

End of Day 1:
Ben Walkden & Rocky Flintoff closed the session with a partnership of 57 off 98, steadying things beautifully for Lancashire

R.Flintoff with 90 off 126 balls 👊

Huge credit to Mike, who was out there from 7am after last night’s downpour to get the game on. ☔️🙈

And to Sam, who kept both squads fuelled with lunch and tea like an absolute star. 👨‍🍳

Join us next week at Newton Sports Club as we host Lancashire CC 2nd XI in a four‑day Second XI Championship game as they take on Middlesex CC entry is free on all four days.

🏏Monday 8th June
🏏Tuesday 9th June
🏏Wednesday 10th June
🏏Thursday 11th June

The Lancashire squad includes two of our very own, George Bell and Ben Walkden. A short commute playing top‑level cricket right here at their home club Newton CC.

Daily schedule
🏏Wickets pitched at 11am
🥣Lunch break at 1pm
🥪Tea break at 3.40pm
🏏Three sessions of quality cricket every day

🍻Bar open from 10.30am
☕️The Lane open from 10am serving hot & cold drinks, sweet treats and breakfast

ONE.CLUB
This week is Volunteers Week, and there’s no better time to shine a light on the incredible people across all our sections who give up their time to coach future footballers, cricketers, tennis players and rugby stars as well as nuturing & strengthening the skills of our established players of all ages 👏👏

Most section volunteers get involved because of their children — but we’re also lucky to have some absolute gems who volunteer simply to give something back to the community and the sport they love.
That mix is what makes our club special.

Each section at Newton Sports Club runs independently under the umbrella of the main club, and we’re immensely proud of that.
Every one has its own identity, its own rhythm, its own challenges.
The size & structure of each section might differ, but every single one is vital.

We need each section to thrive independently so the whole club stays strong — and none of that happens without volunteers.

The structure, the community, the decades of graft that built this place… it all stands on the shoulders of people who give their time freely & we're proud that that's been happening here at Newton Sports Club since 1858.
