Been thinking about coming to yoga but keep putting it off?

Maybe you’re wondering what actually happens when you get to a class.

Or whether you’ll know what you’re doing.

Or whether everyone else will know what they’re doing and you’ll be the only one who doesn’t. 😂

So, here’s what you can expect in the mat based classes.

We usually start lying down. Quiet music, fairy lights scattered around, and a little time to notice the body, breath and mind you’ve arrived with.

Then we start to move — gently at first. Maybe ankles, hips and shoulders. We’ll usually make our way onto hands and knees, then standing for some postures and balances, before coming back down to finish with relaxation.

No complicated sequences to remember. And I’ll guide you through the whole thing.

Some people in class have been practising for months, some for years, some for decades. But the invitation is the same:

Let’s start where we are — and see what happens.

I’ll offer options along the way. When you’re new, you might mostly follow along. As you get more familiar, you might find yourself getting more confident about choosing your own adventure. 😂

Your body. Your practice.

You don’t need to keep up with the person beside you. You don’t need to prove or perform anything.

And you definitely don’t need to know how to do yoga before you come to yoga.

You can just come and see what you think.

I’d love to have you there.

I rode my bike. I didn’t die. 🤣
In fact, it wasn’t nearly as painful as I’d anticipated.

Turns out getting back on a bike after a long break is just like, well….
riding a bike 🤣

A few grunts on the ups. A few WOOHOOOs on the downs. And a bloody lovely day spent on the trails with my friends, gabbing the whole way.

I remembered the joy 😁

This is me cleaning an honestly impressive layer of dust off my mountain bike, because tomorrow I’m getting back on it for the first time in over a year (possibly two)🙈🤣

I love riding my bike. I’ve missed riding my bike. I look at my bike every day and feel guilty for abandoning it. 🙈

And yet somehow that hasn’t been enough to make me actually get back on the bloody thing.

I’m not as fit as I was.
I know tomorrow’s first climb will probably hurt.
And part of me could quite happily wait until I was magically fitter before attempting the activity that would help me get fitter. 🥴🤣

Sound familiar?

Someone came back to yoga with me yesterday after a couple of years away and messaged afterwards:

“Loved it!! Funny, had to fight the intrusive ‘you’ve got loads to get on with’ thoughts at the start but then got into it and remembered the joy!! 🥰🥰”

Remembered the joy.

So I’m going to keep this ridiculously simple.

Do you miss yoga?

If you do, come back.

You don’t need to be as fit or flexible as you used to be. You don’t need to wait until life calms down.

Your practice doesn’t need to look like mine or anyone else’s.

Come as you are now.

And if you don’t miss it? That’s fine too. I trust you to know. 😁

But if you do…

Sometimes I practice yoga to switch on.

To notice my body.
My breath.
My thoughts.
What I’m feeling.
What’s here.

And sometimes…

I’ve paid quite enough fu***ng attention for one day. 😂

There’s a lot happening in the world right now. We can open our phones and be confronted with more suffering, anger, fear, destruction and uncertainty than we know what to do with.

I used to think yoga shouldn’t be another escape from our lives.

That the practice was learning to stay.

I still believe there’s enormous value in that.

But I think I’d accidentally created another little hierarchy. 🙈

Switching on = meaningful practice.
Switching off = avoidance.

And I don’t think I believe that anymore.

Sometimes we need to turn towards.

Sometimes we need to put things down.

Sometimes yoga can be an opportunity to explore what’s happening within us.

And sometimes we can stretch, move, breathe, switch our brains off for an hour and have a lovely lie down in a darkened room 😂

You can come because you want to pay attention.

You can come because you’re exhausted from paying attention.

Both belong.

And maybe what you need from your practice won’t be the same every time.

My weekly yoga classes are there for all of it.

If you’d like to practice with me the link to book is in the bio.

I’d love to see you there 🧡

I’ve been thinking about depth in yoga.

And I think I might have been getting it slightly wrong.

I’ve spent a lot of this year exploring some fairly deep territory in my own practice and work.

You might have noticed 😂

Meditation. Mantra. Self-enquiry. Some big questions about how we meet ourselves and our lives.

And somewhere along the way, I think I started to associate depth with going deeper.

More insight.
More enquiry.
More understanding.
More healing.
Something new to discover.

Meanwhile, there are my ordinary weekly yoga classes.

Sometimes I teach movements I’ve taught hundreds of times.

I use cues and say things my long-term students have heard hundreds of times.

We move.

We breathe.

We come back.

And someone may well arrive wanting to explore their relationship with themselves.

Or they might have tight hamstrings and want a really good lie down.

They might be feeling stressed and could use some relaxation.

Or they might want an hour to themselves where nobody is shouting “Muuuum! 😂😮‍💨

None of those is doing yoga more correctly.

Because I’m beginning to wonder whether depth was never somewhere we had to get to.

Sometimes depth is simply the quality of relationship we have with what’s already here.

This body.

This breath.

This feeling.

This familiar movement, for the 1,234th time.

Here, again.

Maybe I don’t need to keep inventing yoga.

And you don’t need to make your practice profound.

We can just practise.

🧡
