Sharon Wood Tournament – St Mawgan Youth U9s
A chilly start to the morning soon gave way to glorious sunshine, making for a warm and busy day with a fantastic atmosphere at the Sharon Wood Tournament.
St Mawgan’s day began against MAP, a team that has slowly become something of a nemesis over recent months. This time, though, the team were right at it from the first whistle. They produced some excellent passages of play, moved the ball brilliantly, and finished with a couple of superbly worked goals to get the tournament off to the perfect start.
The games came thick and fast, but the standard never dropped. Throughout the day, St Mawgan played some outstanding football, combining fantastic passing and teamwork with moments of real individual brilliance.
After seven group games, St Mawgan found themselves sitting proudly at the top of the table. They had won six games, drawn one 0-0, and incredibly had not conceded a single goal all tournament.
Following a long wait, the semi-final finally arrived. Once again, the team produced another excellent performance, securing their place in the final with another victory—and still without conceding a goal.
The final brought another meeting with MAP. St Mawgan took the lead through a superbly taken free kick and defended heroically for much of the game. With the finish line in sight, however, MAP managed to grab a late equaliser to send the match into extra time.
Tired legs continued to battle, showing incredible determination and resilience, but a long-range strike from MAP found its way past Ben to give them the lead. St Mawgan threw everything forward in search of an equaliser and created some good opportunities, but despite their best efforts, it wasn’t to be.
Another tournament final that has just slipped away—but what a team this is becoming.
The day ended on a wonderful note when the tournament organisers commented on how close the final had been. They also told us that St Mawgan had recorded one of the best league-stage records of the entire tournament and praised the team for being one of the best behaved and most respectful groups there.
Results are always nice, but hearing those comments about the players’ attitude, sportsmanship and respect means just as much.
A huge well done to every single player. You should all be incredibly proud. Keep playing football the St Mawgan way, and the trophies will come. ♥️🩵⚽

We played some outstanding football today and the team should be proud. Another final lost which is sad but another lesson to be learnt. I think as a team we need to find a way of being more excited than nervous and go into these games with a more positive attitude.
It was clear how nervous they were which had a big impact not only on a couple of chances that normally would be taken but the energy levels.
Overall, a day to be proud of. What a team, what a bunch of kids ♥️
