Karate Budokan International is one of the oldest organisations in Wales. Shihan Mike Tan has taught me for 27 years.

Founded in Malaysia in 1966 by Grandmaster Chew Choo Soot, and brought to Wales by his student Shihan Mike Tan in 1974.

One year ago today we opened the Newport class for Karate Budokan International. 💪

What began as a women’s self-defence class has grown into a strong club for women, children, and men alike, built on discipline, respect, confidence, and real practical self-defence.

In just 12 months, it has become something I am incredibly proud of, shaped by every individual who has stepped into the dojo and put in the work.

We are grateful for the ongoing support and guidance of the Head of KBI, Hanshi Mike Tan, and proud that Wales stands as the World Headquarters ... leading the way and setting the standard internationally.
Appreciation also goes to Sensei Paul Wallen for his continued support and guidance, and to Mike Aubrey for his ongoing backing… and for taking the punches 😆
And to my loyal students... your commitment from day one is the foundation this club is built on 💪 Thank you!

🌍 New belt order 🌍

From our July grading, we’ll be aligning with the new “One World Budokan” belt system.
This means a new colour order is being introduced, so some of you will wear your green belt twice during your journey.
The aim is to keep our colour order consistent with Budokan dojos around the world, so wherever you train, the system is the same.
Remember... the belt colour isn’t what matters. Your progress, effort, and commitment are what truly count.
As Hanshi Mike Tan always says: "belts are for holding up your trousers"

Did you know… at Karate Budokan International HQ, we also offer Kobudo training.

Kobudo is the traditional art of Okinawan weaponry, developed centuries ago when everyday farming tools were adapted for self defence. Weapons such as the bo (staff), sai, tonfa, and nunchaku each have their own unique techniques, discipline, and history.
Training in Kobudo isn’t just about learning weapons... it builds precision, coordination, focus, and respect. It deepens your understanding of movement, distance, and control, all of which directly enhance your empty-hand karate.
It’s a powerful way to connect with the roots of martial arts while developing a new level of skill and confidence.
