Newport Rowing Club Newport is a small, friendly rowing club located in the capital town of the Isle of Wight.

Newport is a friendly rowing club located in the capital town of the Isle of Wight. As the only island club to be based on the river Medina, we can offer calm, sheltered waters on which newcomers to the sport will feel safe. The gently sloping riverbank and excellent visibility, combined with minimal river traffic make Newport an ideal club for juniors wishing to try this fantastic sport. The club premises are situated adjacent to woodland and riverside parks, and there are a network of footpaths and cycleways nearby. The balcony of our clubhouse looks out over the Medina, and affords magnificent views along the river. You will also find ample space for your car in our own private, free car park.

What a difference a week makes. Last Saturday week Matt Swiss was down on the coast at Deal, racing under the pier with our Junior Senior crew to win the South Coast Champs. A week later he's racing under Hammersmith Bridge at the Scullers Head to take the Op Masters A title, finishing 12th overall from 512 entries. The mental and physical challenges of the 6.8 km Tideway course makes this a very impressive performance, well done Matt!
Matt has also been a senior sculls winner for Newport.

A fuller round up of club races from Deal. Our JS Open B crew, racing in the supporting regatta had a great start and were just a nose ahead of Coalies approaching the pier. Unfortunately, to avoid a clash with a crew cutting in late to the pier, our crew had to make a late course change and take a different arch under the pier, This cost us the lead, and probably the race. Credit to them for working hard right to the line and finishing a creditable third. Our Junior Men's crew also rowed well and just missed out on a place in the final. The Womens Junior crew, had a poor start, and despite best efforts couldn't make the final. Fin Gorbutt also joind a Ryde composite novice crew, who coped well in the choppy conditions. Did we mention we won a Championship šŸ¤«

Congratulations to Newport's Junior Senior status crew who took South Coast Championship honours at Deal today. Ollie Coulson (str), Matt Swiss, Jake Garner, Alex Barnes, coxed Mariana Hare had taken the lead by the time the crews came under the pier (approx a third of the way through the race), despite having the unfavourable outside lane. After the pier, the water was calmer and the crew really got into their stride, winning comfortable from Worthing in second place and Shoreham in third. This is the club's second consecutive South Coast win, after taking the Junior Status honours last year. Well done guys, and big thankyou to Nick Salter (coach) for his tireless work over the whole year to get to this day.

We are sad to announce the passing of Newport RC Vice President, Terence Blunden BEM on 24th August. Terry was an enthusiastic supporter of the club, having joined as a school boy rower in the 1950s. His teaching career took him away from the island for a while, but when he returned to the island he rejoined us. He was a capable rower, often taking the stroke seat in the days of the Solent Galleys.
When he retired from rowing he used his many skills to help the club grow and prosper. He gave his time generously, helping with practical tasks, as well as working to raise funds and improve facilites. He also supported a wide range of good causes across the island, being a former chairman of the Isle of Wight Sports Council and also secretary of the Isle of Wight branch of the Historical Association.
The river 4+ that has his name 'TJB,' will be on the river as usual this autumn, serving as a continued reminder of Terry's contribution to our club.

His funeral is on 25th September at 11am at Wayfarers Church Carisbrooke.

As coastal fours go, Helen Jane has been a great work horse for Ryde Rowing club over the last 30 years. She now has a new lease of life with us at Newport after a refurb courtesy of Nick Salter. Feedback from her first go on the river was that she's still a fast boat, so maybe her racing days are not quite over.........

The final regatta of the year brought home the Hants & Dorset Junior-Senior Championship for Newport. Going into this final race Newport had a 5-4 lead over rivals Southampton. Southampton could still pull the score back to 5-5 and force a row off if they won the last race of the season. Newport went hard off the start, and were in a good position at the halfway point. Southampton, however, put in everything they had coming out of the buoy turn, challenging Newport to respond again. Newport had the composure to push on once more, and keep both Southampton and the eventual second place crew from BTC at bay. A great crew performance on the day, and from the whole squad over the season. The squad are now looking forward to representing the association at the South Coast Champioships at Deal (Kent) in September.

Newport took three crews to Coalporters Regatta on Saturday. The regatta takes place on the River Itchen in Southampton, starting at Northam Bridge.
The Open Novice crew, rowing in a composite with Ryde RC rowed well, just missing out on a fastest losers place to progress to the semi final. A similar fate befell the Open Junior crew. The Open Junior Senior crew fared better though. Ollie Coulson, Matt Swiss, Jake Garner, Alex Barnes and coxed Fin Gorbutt went to a straight final against Coalporters and Southampton. They came out winners taking the race by approx three lengths. This gives them a one point lead in the championship, going into the final regatta next Saturday.
