Affinity Rowing Club

Affinity Rowing Club Affinity Rowing Club is a growing club in Newhaven, Sussex. Friendly and inclusive, we welcome new members for social rowing, training, and racing

With our three Cornish Gigs, Grace O’Malley, Knucker & Affinity we row out to sea and up the River Ouse. We currently row from Denton Island Marina in a traditional Cornish Pilot Gig called Grace O'Malley (previously Bristol Gig Club’s Isambard). Grace O’Malley, the 16th Century Pirate Queen of Ireland. She was Queen of Umaill, chieftain of the O Maille clan, a rebel, seafarer, and fearless leader

who challenged the turbulent politics of 16th century England and Ireland. While Irish legends have immortalized Grace as a courageous woman who overcame boundaries of gender imbalance and bias to fight for the independence of Ireland and protect it against the English crown; to the English, she was considered a brutal and thieving pirate, who controlled the coastlines through intimidation and plunder. Grace O’Malley was born in Ireland around 1530 as a daughter of the wealthy nobleman and sea trader Owen O'Malley. Upon his death, she inherited his large shipping and trading business. From her earliest days, she rejected the role of the 16th century woman, instead embracing the life on the sea with the fleet of O'Malley trading ships. The income from this business, as well as land inherited from her mother, enabled her to become rich and somewhat powerful .

What a weekend at the World Pilot Gig Championships! 🌊🚣‍♀️

Our Open crew had an incredible run – climbing 7 places overall, winning their heat on Sunday morning and moving up into Group H. Tight racing all the way, finishing in a packed field and absolutely holding their own. So proud of that performance!

Our women’s crew also delivered a solid showing, maintaining their position from last year 💪

This year hasn’t been without its challenges – with injuries across the club – but it really showed what we’re made of. Everyone pulled together, supported each other, and gave it their all ❤️

A special moment too as we saw the first race for our new gig Knucker – exciting times ahead!

And of course… it wouldn’t be the Worlds without celebrating in style – ending on a high with dancing and fun into the night at the Mermaid on the Quay 🕺✨

Hands up – who’s joining us next year

A big thanks to , Avon Corinthians and Steve Lock for helping us get Knucker on the beach!

A big well done (and thank you!) to Ian who was signed off as our latest cox following a solo row at the weekend. None of us would be able to be out doing what we love without our fantastic coxes - great to have another join their ranks 🙏🏼
