Do knots actually exist?
Sort of - but not quite in the way people often imagine.
When people talk about a “knot”, they’re usually describing an area of muscle that feels tight, tender or more sensitive than the surrounding tissue. It can feel like a hard little lump under the skin, but it isn’t literally a muscle tied in a knot.
These areas can become sore for lots of reasons, including increased muscle tension, overuse, stress, changes in activity or simply spending a long time in one position.
Massage can help by reducing sensitivity, improving movement and helping the area feel more comfortable - but we’re not physically “breaking up” or “releasing” a knot.
So yes, the sensation is very real… the knot itself is just a slightly misleading name.
