I know what you’re thinking 🤔 Beth how could possibly say that. Pilates is amazing to help back pain or any other injury.
Trust me I know you’re right but when done incorrectly it can actually be just as dangerous as any other form of exercise.
So here are my thoughts 💭
1. Instructors don’t understand injuries enough to be able to modify movements to suit clients.
2. There is also no basic understanding of the biomechanics of human movements for movements like a bridge which then leads to people getting back pain.
3. Everything is rushed so thus not developing any real connection with mind and body and causing potential injury.
4. We seem to be forgetting where Pilates came from and why it was originally developed. Joseph Pilates created Pilates to help rehabilitate injured soldiers during the war. It was only later that it branched out when he moved to New York but the principles always remained the same.
5. The basic principles are not the focus of the class
6. Clients are not being guided as to which muscles they should be working and where they should be feeling it and not feeling it.
7. There’s to much focus on looking good for social media instead of actually correcting clients and focusing on their needs.
I’m all for Pilates growing and developing but not at the risk of it becoming diluted from where it originally came from. A Pilates HIIT class is not Pilates. I said it!
