British 24HR — AMC Racing Race Report
For our first time competing as privateers in the British 24HR Owners’ Championship, we were excited for the challenge of taking on one of the toughest endurance races on the calendar with a four-driver line-up.
- Qualifying & Race Start
Qualifying saw us start mid-pack in the Clubman field. We had a few pace-altering issues with the kart during qualifying, but these were identified and rectified ahead of the race.
When the lights went out at 12pm, the kart felt immense. We immediately found strong pace and began battling hard, making our way through the field. Unfortunately, our progress was brought to an abrupt halt when the chain came off the sprocket, dropping us from 15th overall to 83rd.
After getting Con back out on track, we were involved in another incident at Hairpin 1 when an Owners’ kart that had spun was subsequently hit by a hire kart and rolled into us. Somehow, we ended up with a contact warning 🤪, but the bigger issue was a front-right tyre coming off the bead of the rim.
Con once again showed incredible determination, limping the kart back to the pits so we could get the tyre reseated and continue.
Things then got even more interesting when we received a nine-lap penalty for being 9kg underweight — something that could only have happened if Con had somehow lost an arm! After some serious consultation, the issue was rectified and we were able to get back to racing.
- Fighting Back
After 2.5 gruelling hours, Kyle took over from Con. Despite being right at the back of the field, we continued to fight and worked our way back up the order throughout Kyle’s stint.
Unfortunately, another incident involving a backward-facing and moving hire kart resulted in yet another puncture. This forced us back into the pits for a driver change, with Sam taking the wheel.
For Sam, this was his first 24-hour race in Owners and, with relatively little competitive karting experience, you would be hard pushed to believe how quickly he has adapted. His pace was right on the mark with the rest of the Clubman class and he put in a seriously impressive stint.
Next up was the crafty old Don Alfonso, bringing our first full rotation of drivers to a close.
- Into the Night
As the sun began to set, it was time for our first scheduled tyre change and the switch to clear visors. With the assistance of the MS awning, the pit stop was completed swiftly and we were back out on track.
This was arguably one of the strongest phases of the race for us. The kart was performing extremely well and our pace was strong enough to keep us with the front runners for the majority of the stint.
Unfortunately, disaster struck once again as we snapped another chain.
Getting the kart back to the pits on one engine was another gruelling task, but the team kept calm, worked together and had us back out on track before we knew it.
- The Final Hours
As the race entered its final stages, every driver had put in huge stints throughout the night and into the early morning. Despite our best efforts, the mechanical issues had cost us valuable laps and left us with little opportunity to recover our position.
With the priority now simply being to bring the kart home, we continued to push.
With just over an hour remaining, the rain arrived — and with it came the perfect opportunity for our wet-weather specialist Kyle to step up once again.
Kyle brought the kart through the final stages and across the chequered flag, securing 20th overall.
It wasn’t the result we had hoped for when we lined up at the start of the 24 hours, but given everything that happened throughout the race, finishing 20th was an unbelievable achievement.
Chains, punctures, penalties, contact, mechanical issues and everything else the 24-hour race could throw at us — the team never gave up.
Every driver played their part, and the teamwork, determination and attitude throughout the entire 24 hours were something we can all be incredibly proud of.
Most importantly, we race under the banner of Andy’s Man Club, and the message behind what we do could not have been more fitting for the weekend
- No matter how hard things get, keep going.
Sometimes things don’t go to plan. Sometimes you get knocked back, and sometimes it feels like everything is working against you. But if you keep going, keep talking and keep supporting the people around you, you can achieve great things.
20th overall. First British 24HR as privateers. Four drivers. 24 hours. Zero quit.
