Something has to change at Newcastle United. Unless it does, at present there is the dismal prospect of continued acquiesce to owners, who are among the worst human rights abusers in the world, are the chief obstructors to meaningful action on climate change, who simply do not care about the club and are indeed using the club, the fans and the city for their own nefarious purposes. Isn’t it time Newcastle United supporters really got back our club?

Another future would be the local media and political class and fans’ groups and individual supporters and citizens of Newcastle, reclaiming their pride and rejecting the notion of having their football club and city merely being used for sportswashing some of the most heinous crimes in modern times.

In the run-up to the 5th anniversary of the takeover NUFCFAS will play its part. We will be launching a campaign highlighting Saudi prisoners of conscience.

FOUR SEASONS OF SAUDI SPORTSWASHING - WAS IT WORTH IT?

We are a group of Newcastle United fans who have opposed the Saudi state takeover of our club for over 4 years. We want to reclaim our club, and reclaim the game. Our beliefs and purpose can be summarised in four goals.

1. Supporting human rights in Saudi Arabia
2. Solidarity with Saudi activists and prisoners of conscience.
3. Opposing sportswashing
4. Reclaiming the game and our club

In the run-up to the 5th anniversary of the Saudi regime takeover on October 7th, 2026 NUFCFAS will be launching a campaign highlighting Saudi prisoners of conscience.

During the FIFA World Cup we have asked fans to put posters on social media supporting Saudi prisoners like Manahel al-Otaibi, a young woman and fitness instructor who has been unjustly jailed in Saudi Arabia for supporting women's rights.

NUFCFAS will be holding events in Newcastle, in the run-up to and on and around October 7th to mark the 5th anniversary of the Saudi regime's takeover of our club.

We will also be linking up with Saudi human rights advocates and will be contacting the new Newcastle City council, MPs and fan groups to ask them to participate in acts of solidarity with Saudi prisoners of conscience around and on October 7th.

We want to:
- Hold a public meeting in Newcastle opposing sportswashing and supporting Saudi prisoners of conscience.
- Organise a 'Pro-Human rights' football match in Newcastle
- Publicise the cases of Manahel and child 'offenders' in danger of ex*****on by the regime which owns Newcastle United
- Lobby and meet Newcastle councillors, MPs, trade unions and women's group to urge them to show solidarity with the victims of the owners of Newcastle United.

WE NEED FUNDS TO:
- Produce posters
- Book meeting rooms
- Send out publicity

SAUDI STATE OWNED NEWCASTLE UNITED AT ODDS WITH CITY'S GREEN POLICIES

In the past Newcastle City Council made a Net Zero 2030 pledge. Newcastle United Chairman Yasir al-Rumayyan is also Chairman of Aramco, which is the world’s largest oil producer, worth around $1.6 trillion, making Aramco the world’s largest polluter and it remains deeply committed to expanding fossil fuel production.

It is 98.5% owned by the Saudi Arabian state which also owns Newcastle United Football Club. In the past Newcastle City councillors and officials have made it clear they would welcome Saudi investment in the city, although little has been forthcoming.

NUFCFAS is asked council candidates to say whether they think it appropriate that the city should welcome investment from Saudi Arabia when a major part of their sports sponsorship strategy is to block international climate action and protect its fossil fuel profits. Policies which on paper Newcastle City Council is opposed to. What will be the position of new councillors on this issue?

All the while, the Saudi regime has continued to severely restrict freedom of association and expression, even though there was a series of releases for individuals arrested for exercising their right to freedom of expression. Overall, the regime severely restricted freedom of expression and association resulting in human rights defenders and other critics having to undergo grossly unfair trials and facing long prison terms and arbitrary travel bans. Some of the trouble bans have been given to those recently released from detention.

The Kafala (sponsorship) system remains in place for migrant workers including domestic workers, who are bound by it and continued to face exploitation, abuse and must deportations.
The role of women continued to be undermined, as they were treated as second class citizens facing discrimination in law and practise.

As the temperature continue to increase and records broken, and the Climate Crisis deepens, Saudi Arabia also failed to take adequate measures to ensure but the people in the country had the right to a healthy environment.

June has been another month of suffering and hardship for many innocent people in Saudi Arabia. Shouldn’t we remember them and try to help them?
