Finding the Right Coach:
Finding the right coach is never easy. A great coach should teach game skills and life skills. Choosing a coach based on the successes of other athletes in the program is a common mistake. Be careful to choose the right coach for you!
Have a look into their culture, values, and principles. Find out the philosophies emphasized in the program. Do they include personal development, skilled instruction, and decision-making? Does the program nurture a love of the game? Do they have high standards? Does the coach use a command-style approach or guided-discovery? Does the coach have a culture that promotes a healthy learning environment? Most importantly, does the coach educate beyond the game, teaching life skills in addition to sport skills?
When choosing a coach, remember you aren't only buying into their knowledge of the game, but into their mindset and their beliefs too. Choose carefully! Communication between you and your coach is vital. You have to be able to be honest with each other, to ask questions, and to be comfortable discussing everything from goals, to health, to training schedules and more.
Don't choose the best coach. Choose the RIGHT coach. One that cares about you.
