On Monday evening we looked at a technique called 'The Bear Hug'. So, what is this technique?

In Aikido, the bear hug refers to a grappling scenario where an opponent grabs and holds you tightly, typically around the chest or waist, with both arms wrapped around your body. There are variations of the bear hug depending on whether the opponent grabs you from the front, back, or even whether your arms are pinned or free.

In Aikido, the bear hug is not considered an overly dangerous position because the art focuses on using the opponentโ€™s energy and momentum to escape or counter. ๐Ÿฅ‹

Let's talk history ๐Ÿ“–

Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba, also known as O-Sensei, which means "Great Teacher." He developed Aikido in the early 20th century, with the formal establishment of the art occurring in the 1940s. Ueshiba was influenced by various martial arts he had studied, including Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu, and by his spiritual beliefs, particularly the teachings of the Omoto-kyo religion.

Ueshiba created Aikido with the aim of achieving a martial art that emphasized harmony and the peaceful resolution of conflict. He envisioned Aikido not just as a physical discipline but also as a way to foster personal growth and spiritual development. The techniques of Aikido are designed to blend with and redirect an opponent's energy rather than opposing it directly, reflecting Ueshiba's philosophy of using martial arts to promote peace and reconciliation.

Last night we studied a little on taisabaki. Understanding taisabaki is important because it's the art of body movement and positioning, crucial for effective self-defense. Taisabaki enables us to evade attacks, maintain balance, and control our opponents movements ๐Ÿฅ‹

Here's some reasons from our 3rd Dan Val, as to why you should join us in learning Aikido ๐Ÿฅ‹

"Aikido doesn't teach fighting techniques in any conventional sense or with the idea of literally using those techniques in combat. Rather, Aikido includes a number of attacks and defences to demonstrate the efficient redirection of force and movement.
It can be practised by anyone, even those who feel old or nervous.
Aikido conveys the principles of not countering force with force. It teaches how to respond to an action with a reaction that, instead of force is yielding.
A person attacks, and that attack is neutralized using the attack itself to prevail."

With gradings approaching, we looked at ninin dori practice this week.

Ninin dori is where the student faces two attackers simultaneously. The goal is to neutralize both attackers while maintaining awareness of their movements and intentions. It emphasizes blending with the energy of the attackers, redirecting their force, and using efficient techniques to control and neutralize the situation.

It challenges us to develop adaptability, timing, spatial awareness, and the ability to handle multi-attacker scenarios effectively ๐Ÿฅ‹

Monday night we looked at how important it is to step off-line when someone comes in to attack you. Here's 3 reason why you need to step off-line:

๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜†: By moving off-line, you can avoid direct confrontation with an opponent's attack, reducing the risk of injury to yourself.

๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—น: Stepping off-line allows you to disrupt the attacker's balance and control the engagement, giving you the upper hand in redirecting their energy.

๐—™๐—น๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜†: Aikido emphasizes fluid movement and adaptability. Stepping off-line facilitates this by allowing you to flow with the attacker's energy rather than directly opposing it.
