Holding postures for longer which is typical in a Sivananda style class is not easy but the benefits are immense. The mind becomes clear and focused through deep yogic breath.
Consciousness expands and stress is released, negative thinking reduces, the self becomes empowered.

As for physical benefits vitality is boosted and the body becomes energised. Muscles get stronger and more flexible as do joints, ligaments and tendons.
This style of yoga is fantastic for the spine, making it much stronger and more mobile
Due to holding postures the digestive system improves, belly fat is reduced and the overall nervous system relaxes

Back to Kranti yoga school.. memories of waking at dawn every morning, rolling my mat out, feeling sick with lack of sleep. Practising Ashtanga day after day until we were ready to teach. The epitome of tapas (one of the limbs to the 8 limbed path of yoga), which can translate as drive, passion, committing to something higher than oneself.
It wouldn't have been possible without my yoga family at Kranti, without the warmth, laughs and pure joy (most) evenings.
And now back in Newbury, we have our own yoga family, meeting once a week to commit to this wonderful practice.
Happy 2024 to all of my students who show up and support me every week

Garden class - level 2 this Monday at 6.10pm.
We'll be delving into svadhyaya (self study or the study of ancient texts ). This is arguably the most difficult limb and I'm going to talk about the 5 hindrances to yoga. These are mis-knowing, egoism, attachment to pleasure, hatred and fear of death.
Through a practise focused on back bends, we will witness ourselves in the practice
As Socrates said' know yourself to heal yourself '

Ashtanga training with the legendary David Swenson all weekend - luckily it happened to be in Manchester, a city of such vibrancy and beauty.

Useful things I learnt - flexibility is good but it's better to be focused on breath, students can be moved onto the second series even if they haven't mastered the first, relax!, external focus = internal calmness, we may never 'achieve' the perfect posture but at least we tried, all yoga is therapy, inner peace comes from being passionate and energetic about your purpose, self study is THE hardest limb of all.

ECSTATIC DANCE CLASS CONFIRMED! 19th May 7 -9pm Price £15 Venue Woolton Hill Village Hall
For those who expressed an interest in this, it's going ahead.
What to expect - on arrival we will drink cacao, savour the taste and briefly connect . Then we'll get moving. I will guide your body through movement and dance, to different styles of music. All dancing is freestyle and feelings may be euphoric , joyful , you may be uplifted and energetic. There will be opportunities to rest whenever you need to. There will be no right or wrong in this workshop the aim is for you to boost your mood and spirit.
At the end we will sink to the floor where I will guide you through a meditation technique called yoga nidra (sleep). The aim of this isn't to sleep but for your body and mind to rest and restore. You will need to bring a blanket and yoga mat (I have spares if needed ) and even a cushion if you want extra comfort .
Head massages are also available although they will be short as I need to get around everyone !

Want a great stretch through the hips and quads, whilst releasing the chest at the same time then try baddha anjaneyasana or bound low lunge pose. Once you practise with the strap, in time you'll get the full bind. I have to focus so much on stability that this really does calm my mind

We'll try this posture in class next week

I can't wait to come back to my yoga community this eve after a couple of weeks off. We'll be working the glutes and to focus the mind on one fixed point (dharana) everyone will have a small candle to gaze upon at the beginning of class. Benefits of trataka (staring at a single point) are improved eyesight and concentration, more space in the mind leading to clarify. See you later

After a grey December day, the lights came on and Ganesh was surrounded by colour. I'm excited to be teaching headstand variations (bound headstand A and B ) this eve. It's not about who manages to get into the perfect posture it's about us all being together, working and challenging ourselves, strengthening the upper body, finding connection, being present and finding space and peace in our chattering mind. We are not our thoughts, we are the space above or the gap between.
See you later at 6.10 or tomorrow at 6.30pm
Gentle yoga (no inversions is Thurs at 10am)
