We have a new home for summer! Our group classes on a Tuesday evening (8-8.45pm) will be at the 1st Wash Common Scout hut over the summer holidays.

Come and join us if you are looking for a fun and varied workout. There are options to cater for everyone, regardless of your fitness level. This is what class member Jill (first left) said about the class:

"Gill’s classes are always fun and supportive. No two weeks are the same. She takes time to check on everyone & gets the balance between pushing you and understanding your limits."

Own your workout!

Here is me doing a modified press up...why?! Because after the first set of full press ups, I lose my form, and I know I need to elevate it to keep my technique on point.

If I keep modifying and adding progressions each week, I will see improvements and eventually be able to complete all sets as full press ups. But for now, this is right for me.

My point is that it's so important to remember that this is your fitness, your journey, and your goals. Not the person next to you in a group class or in the gym, not another mum from the school gate, or your partners, etc. So if you are doing an exercise and are feeling it somewhere other than the target muscle or your form is being compromised, then modify it! A common one is feeling ab exercises in your back or neck.

You will see much greater improvements (and less chance of injury) when you peel it back a layer and build from there.

Big shout out to all the ladies that worked so hard in last night's class - with many of you taking the modifications as and when needed  👏

Step up! One of my favourite exercises (as my PT clients know), and maybe my motto for this year!

A good step up (unless you are doing them as a cardio exercise) needs to be slow, with the focus on not pushing off the ground with the back foot on the way up! Make sure the front leg is doing all the work, and descend slowly with control for some serious 🍑 burn!

Form focus: Make sure the box isn't too high; below knee height is good. Don't let the knee collapse in. Feel your glutes and quads working and think about keeping your pelvis (hips) stable. I like to keep my working leg on the box until all the reps or time is complete (rather than stepping on and off with both feet each time).

In terms of stepping it up in 2023...I'm about to launch a new women only fitness class (watch this space), I'm going to stop making excuses and try and put more content on here, plus work towards a new personal fitness goal.... !

First park run since I've moved to Newbury and since having my youngest!

We've been in Newbury 3 months now and the house and the area are starting to feel like home, but it's taking part in events like that make you start to feel like you are taking steps towards being part of the community, which is something we are still working on. Was a great morning out, with friendly volunteers and runners alike 🙂 will def be back again!

Found the last 1km quite hard, but seeing my two girls cheering near the finish got me across the line 🥰

Merry Christmas to everyone, and I hope you all have a lovely day tomorrow. X

GOALS!
I know, I know... With so much going on, it's so hard to think about what you want to achieve just today, let alone for your own health and fitness in 2023!

BUT...I know I've been guilty in the past of not setting any tagets pre Christmas, then burying my head in a pile of mince pies and wine until mid Jan, then panic about feeling sluggish before throwing myself aimlessly into a new gym/bikram yoga/thai boxing* membership without any thought as to what I want to achieve or get out of it....only to quit 6 weeks later 😅  Pretty confident I'm not alone on this one. Does anyone relate??

So, let's start 2023 differently. Set yourselves a small goal for the end of Jan or early Feb. Make it realistic and put a plan in place now for how you will achieve it.

My goal: to run the London Winter Run 10k on the 5th Feb. Is it realistic: My aim is simply to complete it and enjoy the experience and not worry about time, so it should be. How will I do it: I am running twice a week (one long, one short) and have put them all in my calender so that they are planned around everything else.

*all great forms of exercise, I just didn't have purpose and therefore lost motivation to continue!

CARDIO OR RESISTANCE - which do you prefer?

Resistance training: after the age of 30 we start to lose between 2-5% of lean mass every decade! Resistance training helps maintain or increase lean mass - and the more lean body mass you have, the greater your basal metabolic rate!
Plus weight training is shown to increase bone density - which given that women can lose up to 20% of their bone density in the 5 to 7 years after menopause, makes adding in resistance work pretty important. Plus for me personally, I love feeling strong enough to pick up both my girls and play silly games without too much effort!

Cardio - here is a pic of me getting totally lost on my morning run today (thanks to the kind lady who showed me how to get home!)! I got muddy, wet and it's was a pretty chilly start! BUT...I loved it! For me it's all about those endorphins. Its an escape, gets me out in the fresh air and gives me a chance to think things through if needed. Plus, as I'm sure most of you know it has great benefits to our cardiovascular health!

So for me, the answer is both ☺️ which do I prioritise? Well that depends on my current goals...but that's for another day! 🙃
