🎾 MEET THE CAPTAINS 🎾

Next up in our Meet the Captains series is Gary Brickles, captain of our Mixed 2nd Team.

Gary joined Newark Tennis Club in 2018 and has been a captain for many years, previously leading our Men’s teams before taking on the Mixed 2nd Team. He’s also been a familiar face on the club’s competitive tennis scene for many seasons.

💬 What made you join?
“I decided I needed to keep fit in an enjoyable way, so that’s what made me join Newark TC.”

💬 Favourite thing about the club?
“All the friendly people right from my first social night, and the possibility of playing competitive league matches.”

🎾 Tennis Profile:
• Prefers: Doubles (although in his younger days it would have been Singles!)
• Racket: Donnay (as used by Bjorn Borg)
• Favourite Shot: Down the Line
• Most Consistent Shot: “Any that go in!”
• Favourite Surface: Grass
• Favourite Grand Slam: Wimbledon
• Tennis Hero: Björn Borg

🏆 Greatest tennis achievements?
Winning a couple of leagues as captain, as well as representing Newark in an over-50s match against The Queen’s Club.

Gary’s love of grass courts goes all the way back to his junior days playing at Arnoldfield Courts, now Grantham Tennis Club – and his choice of racket has a fitting connection to his tennis hero, Björn Borg.

Thanks Gary for everything you do for the club, for the many years you’ve spent captaining our teams and for leading our Mixed 2nd Team.

🎾 SUMMER LEAGUES 2026 — MID-SEASON UPDATE 🎾

Halfway through the summer season and Newark Tennis Club are putting in a serious shift across Notts and Lincs & District!

🏆 Standout performers: Ladies 1 unbeaten across both ProSet and Lincs & District fixtures, and Men 1 unbeaten in Lincs & District.
💪 Solid showings from Mixed 2, Mixed 3 and Men 2, all winning more than they’ve lost.
📈 58 matches played, 38 won — great work across every team.

Massive thanks to everyone representing the club this season — captains, players and supporters alike. Onwards to the second half! 🎾

Next up in our Meet the Captains series is Tamsin Ellis, another of our newest captains and leader of Newark Tennis Club’s Ladies 1st Team in the Lincoln & District League.

Tamsin has been a member of Newark Tennis Club since 2021 after social tennis at the club was recommended by a tennis-playing friend.

“The club is full of friendly and enthusiastic people, with all levels of tennis being enjoyed and encouraged.”

• Racket: Head Ti.S1 (which she’s had for almost 30 years!)
• Favourite Shot: Deep Baseline Shot
• Most Consistent Shot: Forehand
• Favourite Surface: Standard All-Weather Court
• Favourite Grand Slam: Wimbledon (especially the first week!)
• Tennis Heroes: Carlos Alcaraz and Sonay Kartal

🏆 Greatest tennis achievement?
Seeing her teams win their leagues – and with two new teams competing in the Lincoln & District League, there’s plenty to play for this season.

Away from team tennis, Tamsin is a regular daytime social player and organises the club’s annual Ladies’ Tennis Day, helping to bring members and non-members together for a fantastic day of tennis.

Next up in our Meet the Captains series is Brandon, another one of our newest captains, leading Newark Tennis Club’s Men’s 1st Team in the Lincoln & District League as the club embarks on its first season in the competition.

Brandon has been a member of Newark Tennis Club for just over two years, returning to the sport after playing tennis from the age of five.

💬 What made you join?
“I’ve been a tennis player since I was 5, so I needed to get back into it.”

💬 Favourite thing about the club?
“The amazing members, great inclusivity, and the balance of social and competitive tennis.”

Next up in our Meet the Captains series is John Sampson, newest team captain and captain of our Mixed 3rd Team.

John has been a member of Newark Tennis Club for five years and credits the daytime rota crew for helping him become part of the club.

💬 What made you join?
“The daytime rota crew.”

“The amount of tennis on offer and always having people to have a knock with.”

• Winning the Mixed Consolation Cup alongside Helen by defeating Annie and Edgars two years ago.
• Partnering with Edgars for the Men’s 2nds to beat Gary and Rich when the Men’s 1sts and 2nds were competing in the same division.

Whether he’s captaining, playing, supporting teammates or cheering from the sidelines, John is always at the heart of club tennis.
