Today, Heather returned to Guy's and St. Thomas's Hospital to deliver the second part of her pranayama training to the clinical psychologists and physiotherapists on their Pain Management Team, one of the leading pain clinics in the country.

The team is making a meaningful transition: expanding their approach from generic slow breathing techniques to include traditional yoga breath practices, drawing on the depth of the tradition while using contemporary language to communicate them to patients. It is a quiet but significant shift.

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Patrycja Jakubiec, a psychologist on the team and a graduate of The Minded Institute's Diploma in Yoga Therapy, who is not only applying this knowledge directly with patients but helping to bring traditional yoga practices into mainstream healthcare, thoughtfully, steadily, and with real effect.

This is exactly the kind of ripple we hoped this work would create.

We look forward to welcoming our next cohort of yoga teachers and healthcare professionals to the Enhanced Diploma in October and to seeing how they bring traditional yoga and/or yoga therapy practices into healthcare, education, and community settings.

If you work within a clinical service and would like Heather to train your team, please DM us. Charity rates are available for NHS teams.

Online Yoga Works Better for Pain. Yes, Really.

A new study from the US Department of Veterans Affairs found that yoga delivered online reduced musculoskeletal (MSK) pain more effectively than in-person classes. The online group also had higher retention.

This may seem surprising.

In-person yoga is often assumed to be best. But for those living with chronic pain, getting to a class can be physically and emotionally taxing. Travel, discomfort, social load, and the effort to show up can worsen symptoms before a class even begins.

Teleyoga removes those barriers. Participants practise in their own homes, choose how to set up, lie down when class ends, and manage their own social engagement. This is not about convenience. It is about creating conditions that support healing.
In this 12-week trial, only the online group experienced a statistically significant reduction in pain. And 83% stayed the course, compared to 68% in the in-person group.

Even though the in-person group attended slightly more classes on average, the outcomes were not better. This study reminds us that showing up more does not always mean healing more. The most effective care may be the kind that places the fewest demands on bodies already in distress.

There is also a broader opportunity here.

If online yoga reduces pain and improves retention, it becomes a scalable and cost-effective way to support people who might never make it to class. It also supports the professionals delivering the care.
Yoga teachers and therapists often offer profound service at very low cost. Online models reduce overhead and increase reach, creating space for more appropriate pay. Equity must extend to both the people receiving care and the people providing it.

This is not a call to replace in-person yoga. It is a call to expand what is possible.
Meeting people where they are may be the future of sustainable, effective care.

Donna Noble is one of the directors of the Minded Institute. She is conducting a research to understand the barriers to individuals practicing yoga.

Donna is an internationally renowned yoga teacher, author, speaker on body positivity, diversity and inclusion, and has made it her mission to improve diversity and inclusion in the yoga and well-being space.

As a champion for health and well-being for everyone, she is looking to understand the stereotypes/ barriers that might be keeping people from trying yoga via a research survey.

The findings from this research will be pivotal for Donna’s book and most importantly for findings ways to share yoga in the places it may be most needed and least accessible.

If you have 5 minutes, please share your honest thoughts on why you (or someone you know) might hesitate to try yoga. Please also share with your communities, friends and families.

Leave a comment below if you would like to take part in the research, and we will send the link directly to your inbox.
