Dan and Michelle Riley set up the orienteering company. Michelle is a level 2 orienteering coach and keen orienteer. Dan is a level 3 orienteering coach, coach educator, qualified teacher and British Orienteering Services Officer at British Orienteering. Michelle learnt the art of orienteering mapping as an apprentice and has been developing orienteering in schools for the last 13 years. Dan has d
eveloped the scheme of work and delivers the teacher training. He is qualified to deliver the 'teaching orienteering' courses endorsed by British Orienteering and is also able offer targeted inset / twilight delivery. We have developed a set of permanent markers that tie into the National curriculum using numbers as products and factors, single letter anagrams and phonic sounds for younger students. The scheme of work contains 20 progressive sessions typically aimed at KS2 but can be easily adapted for younger students and for high school students in KS3 and KS4. The sessions are a mixture of skills and competition based activities. We have created the packages to make delivering orienteering convenient for the busy teacher. These include markers permanently in place and a bespoke schemes of work with sessions, maps with answers ready to print. The teacher training sessions help to embed this resource and make staff confident to deliver orienteering. Together these resources make the delivery of orienteering in a school environment as convenient as possible for the teacher, reducing planning and preparation time to virtually nothing. Orienteering can be linked to National Curriculum in PE, Geography, Maths, Science, language and communication and this type of outdoor learning helps create a growth mindset, is character building and develops resilience. Developing orienteering in schools is a great option for sports premium funding as it meets the governments requirements for the funding to:
"make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport on offer"
"add to the PE and sports activities your school already offers"
"makes improvements now to benefit pupils joining in future years"
