West Woking women vs Beecholme Belles
Well, that was a game.
With Beecholme arriving with 10 players, we had enough players available but decided to start with 10 too, because apparently fair play is something we actually believe in.
The pitch was new territory for us and, quite frankly, had a few character-building features. Namely, holes. Lots of them. Actual holes.
It was a high-action game from the start, with both teams battling hard and neither side giving much away. Beecholme struck first to make it 1–0.
Woking were then awarded a penalty following a sliding tackle in the box. Unfortunately, the spot kick was missed, but we kept pushing and eventually found the back of the net to bring the game level.
Then came the moment nobody had planned for: one of our players lost a fight with a hole in the pitch and came off injured. We genuinely hadn’t realised pothole avoidance was going to be part of the match plan.
The final stages were anyone’s game. Woking had a late run through on goal with a chance to steal all three points, but in a fitting conclusion to the afternoon, the player managed to trip over her own feet.
Football, eh?
The final whistle brought an entertaining and hard-fought 1–1 draw, which was probably the fairest result after a game where both sides had chances to win it.
A great effort from everyone today. Ten players, plenty of action, one penalty miss, one pitch-related casualty, one accidental trip and a point apiece.
We’ll take that.
