Alresford Mobile Cycle Repairs

Alresford Mobile Cycle Repairs I have retired. I no longer service or repair bikes. I will continue to post tips and info. I may organise events and sell refurbished bikes.

I have never used a bike mechanic to service my bikes, therefore I cannot recommend an alternative mechanic. Does your cycle need some attention? Would you like someone to call round and give you an assessment of what is required and the costs? Basic adjustments can be made on the spot. Parts may be required. As much work as possible will be done on the spot and put you back on the road quickly.

Dropped into Holden Farm Camping today for lunch with three other cyclists. Great coffee, food, tractor racing and bike tools.

If you planning to stay the night before or after the Hampshire Cycle Jamboree at The Flower Pots Inn & Brewery on Saturday 26 September, this is a good spot.

A few thoughts after finding out the latest Lotus EV the Eletre R is 905 bhp.

A few horses have achieved 15 bhp but never get to 60 mph which the Eletre R does in 2.7 seconds.

There are roughly 750 watts in a horsepower.

Recreational cyclists achieve 175 watts on average = 0.233 bhp. They also never get to 60mph.

Tour de France riders average 300 watts = 0.4 bhp and a track cyclist can reach 1,500 watts = 2 bhp. They can hit 60 mph when fully warmed up.

In 2021, Tadej Pogačar averaged 41.2kph = 25.6 mph on the Tour de France.

Chris Hoy has done over 50 mph for short sections of the race during his medal wins on the track.

This road in the US may have been built for cars in the 1930s but they had bhps below 50 and few could achieve 60 mph.

Why do we allow motor vehicles on the roads with maximum power, speeds, accelerations and weights they were not designed for?

Transport secretary Heidi Alexander says the government’s new Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy will focus on “everyday” travel needs, while pushing for 60% of all schoolchildren to use active travel by 2035.

The £4.5bn strategy, which aims to build 5,000 new safe cycling and walking routes by 2030, also targets at least 55% of shorter, urban trips to feature some form of active travel in the next decade.

“Most people in this country drive. They walk, they cycle, they might use public transport, they might jump on a bus, they might use a train, and so trying to divide people into different categories is a complete waste of time,” Alexander said.

How can you help me?

I need bikes and other valuable >£50 cycling stuff to be consigned to my cycle auction on the 26th September at the The Flower Pots Inn & Brewery.

My target is 50-100 bikes worth on average £150-250 each, that is in the range of £50 to £2,000!

I have a few to list in that range already (my next job) but I need some collections to sell.

Do you have one?

Do you know someone who has passed away and their partner or friends need help selling them?

Do you need to thin out your collection?

Please contact me if I can help.

p.s. the Alresford Pigs Association will be helping me on the day and will get the surplus income from this event.

Wouldn’t it be nice, as active travel becomes more prevalent, that the accident rate went down rather than up for those not driving?

What has to happen for that to happen?

Drivers driving as required by the Highway Code.

Driving appropriately for the road conditions and locale. Which means driving at far less than the speed limit on urban and country roads.

What else would make a significant difference?

One wonders about the contents of some driver’s heads.

On the short ride from King Alfred’s Statue to the Railway Station on my Brompton, a car left hooked me, without quite making contact.

I was riding up the High Street (blue line).

They pulled out of Walcott Place as I passed the junction. Then immediately turned left across my front wheel into the road leading to Wi******er Crown Court. (Red line)

Probably a taxi driver with a judge inside. Obviously late for the court.

Note proximity to Hampshire Constabulary as well.

I used a lot of obscene vocab. The pedestrians just smiled gaily at me!

Hot tips for hot weather:

- If you have inner tubes with patches be aware these can fail in this sort of weather. The glue softens and patches pop off. Don’t they Bryce Mansfield?

- Don’t leave your wheels or bike lying flat in the midday sun. Tyre pressure will rise rapidly and the tyre will pop off the the rim and the inner tube will make a loud bang.

- Park your bike in the shade at the cafe or pub to minimise the chances of the above happening.

- Fit that extra water bottle cage you have in the shed.

- If the heat is getting to you, seek shade and take a nap.

- Ideally never be further than 5 miles from a pub or cafe or beach or lake (it doesn’t take too long for Lycra to dry in this weather, even if you are wearing it).

- Check your tyres: small splits are going to be stressed by tyre pressures rising.

- Start out on lower pressure than normal to avoid over pressurising the tyres.

- Use this to calculate the “ideal” pressure for your tyres: https://silca.cc/en-gb/pages/pro-tire-pressure-calculator

- If you run 50-60mm tyres on 17mm rims be prepared for the tyre to pop off the rim.

- Do not pump tyres to the max pressure on the tyre sidewall. Only 120-140kg riders on 18kg steel frames need these pressures. (Note: sometimes rims have a lower rating than the tyres you are using!)
