I haven’t posted too much this year because I haven’t done a lot of racing due to having quite a few health issues including severe degenerative arthritis in my right shoulder that causes me a lot of pain, especially after a two hour lawn mower race. This weekend we were racing at west Lavington. The fields at Lavington are so smooth compared to most of the other tracks and the mower has always gone really well there. I had the fastest lap time all day on practice day and with no one to challenge me I was challenging my self trying to get every corner perfect and searching for that perfect lap and trying to get under 1 min 45 secs. On a shallow left hand corner going past the pits the right rear wheel dug into the ground and the mower spat me off at close to 40 mph. I hit the ground hard head first smashing my helmet. I could hear the mower barrel rolling behind me smashing into the ground and as I was face down on the ground the mower caught me up and hit me quite hard. Now as you can imagine I’m feeling a bit beaten up with a good few scrapes and bruises and also a mild headache which has only just gone. I decided it was best to not race today. I want to say thank you to those who rushed over to make sure I was ok and to everyone at mower madness for their concerns and well wishes. The mower didn’t suffer too bad the bonnet took quite a bit of damage and the steering wheel is written off but I did go back out after I crashed and set a fastest time of 1:44.177. We are back at Lavington in two weeks time for the last race of the year.

We had a great weekend racing with mower madness in what was my first race of the year. We took the win and had fastest laps both days (without cutting any corners 😂). Thanks to Jo for everything she does and to Jessie for being pretty well behaved all weekend. Thanks to Kevin Seymour for the help during the pit stop. Martin next in two weeks.

Been a while since I have posted anything so I thought I ought to show you all what I’ve been up to. The belt tensioner had a bit of side to side play as the bushes had worn so I’ve had a new one machined with solid bronze bushes. The clutch guard had been repaired already and started developing another crack so I have fabricated a brand new one and also extended it around the front of the clutch to help stop stones and rocks making their way to the middle of the mower. I also have fabricated and fitted an almost full length under tray to hopefully prevent some of the damage we have taken over the last couple of years and also to create ground affect. A little bit of downforce will increase cornering speed all I need to do now is fabricate the double diffuser. 😉

The first mower I built had rubber mud guards but I found that when mud built up on them the weight of the mud would rip them off every race or practice session I would lose one. I tried all sorts of different rubber and methods of bolting them on but no matter what I tried I would always end up replacing them and I always carried spare ones. Then someone I worked with suggested using an oil container as they are designed to be strong and resilient and easy to get hold of. I made some mudguards out of an oil barrel and they worked well they didn’t fall off but they were just a little bit too thin and flexible. I found out the material oil barrels are made of is HDPE or high density polyethylene. HDPE is cheap and easy to get hold of. My mudguards are are 250mm wide by 500mm long and 3mm thick. To purchase a sheet that size is £3.12p so two mudguards are £6.24 which is incredibly cheap. The great thing about HDPE it is flexible enough to not break if they drag on the ground but stiff enough that they won’t get caught up In the wheels and strong enough that no matter how much mud builds up on them they don’t fall off. I highly recommended switching from rubber to high density polyethylene.
