Instructor Profile:
Roy Flatt Sensei
Roy Sensei began his Karate journey in 1971 in the centre of Liverpool. Originally drawn to boxing, he loved the contact and the discipline but something was missing. A local Karate class changed everything. The variety of techniques and physical intensity pulled him in immediately. It was the beginning of a path that would define the rest of his life.
Today, Roy Sensei holds the rank of 8th Dan and serves as an International Advisor (Komon) for the IOGKF. He is also one of the most senior instructors within the English Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Association (EGKA). At his Childwall Karate Academy in Liverpool, he has been teaching and training for over 30 years, fostering a community rooted in traditional martial arts values.
What makes Roy Sensei stand out is his straightforward, no-frills approach to Karate. He teaches the way he trains: direct, clear and uncompromising. His sessions are full of real-world application, sharp timing and a dry sense of humour. His motto? "Try your best.
Never give up. Show respect to others and keep ducking." For participants of the European Gasshuku 2025, Roy Sensei offers a training experience grounded in over five decades of diligent trai-ning. His sessions are intense and inspiring, a chance to learn from a true Karateka who has walked the path and understands what it takes to grow through hard work and commitment.
