OPTIMAL AROUSAL LEVELS

-

I know what you’re thinking, hang on I thought this was a strength and conditioning page, and no I'm not into massive men in stringers... well not like that anyway! FYI there are different types of arousal, for the purpose of this blog I'll be explaining the high performance levels of arousal in sport so get your mind out of the gutter!

Most of us at one time or another have felt the pressure and/or anxiety that can come when performing at a high level, whether trying to achieve something that you’ve never done before, pushing past your preconceived limits or competing in a new environment. If met with an optimal level of arousal it can drive you and lift you up to meet the challenge head on and on the other hand other it can become a scary situation and makes you feel uneasy and off your game, both of these outcomes depend on the level of arousal that’s produced by the brain.

Kia ora team.

Had my first crack at a blog. Thought I would get things started with a popular but misunderstood topic of motivation.

Hope you all enjoy

Over the years Ive lost count of the amount of people who say “if only I had your motivation to do ..." "It must be nice to really enjoy going to the gym and training so hard, I just find it boring" or "I start off well but then lack motivation after a while and can’t seem to get back on track.....

Do you even accessorise? Some like to keep it pretty specific all year round and rather increase volume to intensity ratio while keeping the main lifts the staple. Here at the SSNZ during the GGP phase we like to incorporate more non specific exercise selection while keeping the main lifts or variations of going to a lesser degree. This can give the body a well earned rest after a big season and help correct weaknesses in movement patterns. One way we do this is by incorporating unilateral movement allowing us to gain access to a greater range of motion and isolate a specific muscle to improve strength at these new found ROM, increasing movement acquisition. However if you’ve just got crap technique in the squat, bench, or deadlift no amount of accessories will be much help, hire a good coach and get to get to work on those lifts.

What accessories do you use? Hit us up in the comments.

Pic shows some finishers a couple SSNZ clients used to target weaknesses.
