Training with your Cycle 🩷

One of the biggest mistakes we make is expecting our body to perform exactly the same every day of the month.

Hormones naturally fluctuate throughout your cycle, and with them can come changes in energy, strength, recovery, appetite and motivation. Learning to work with these changes rather than fighting them can help you get more from your training.

🌸 Menstrual Phase (Days 1-5)
Energy may be lower and recovery may feel slower.
✔️ Walking
✔️ Mobility work
✔️ Light strength training if you feel up to it
✔️ Prioritise sleep and recovery

⚡ Follicular Phase (Days 6-14)
Energy and mood often improve as oestrogen rises.
✔️ Strength training
✔️ Running
✔️ Higher intensity workouts
✔️ Progression and personal bests

🔥 Ovulatory Phase (Days 15-17)
Many women feel strongest and most powerful during this phase.
✔️ Heavy lifting
✔️ Sprint work
✔️ High-intensity training
✔️ Challenging workouts

🌙 Luteal Phase (Days 18-28)
Energy can gradually decline and recovery may take longer.
✔️ Moderate intensity training
✔️ Zone 2 cardio
✔️ Pilates and mobility work
✔️ Focus on consistency over intensity

The most important thing? These are guidelines, not rules.

Some women feel no difference at all. Others notice huge changes. The best training plan is always the one that takes into account how you feel.

At Excel Fitness we adapt sessions to the individual. Whether you’re ready to smash a PB or need a lower-intensity session, there’s always a way to keep moving and making progress.

I saw this article pop up on my news feed the other day and it’s a good reminder that we shouldn’t only see exercise as a tool for weight loss.

Yes, nutrition plays a huge role in changing body composition and improving health, but exercise gives us so much more than just a number on the scales.
