Monday evening I spotted one of my female Call ducks wandering around with 5 ducklings, I think she had probably just brought them out from her nest in the stinging nettles. I knew she was out there as she would appear for food some nights but experience has now proved that leaving her hidden was the best thing. However once they are hatched they become very vulnerable, we have too many predators of all kinds that will kill them, within an hour there were 4 big black birds circling the chicken/duck area, so I had to take action and locate a new safe home for them. They seem strong little ducklings and mummy duck is a very good mummy, very protective. They seem happy in their new home but the next step will be to secure a pen on the grass for them to wander in, when they are a tiny bit bigger.

Back at the end of January we decided to get six chickens from the British Hens Welfare Trust who find homes for ex-commercial hens. We have done this before on a bigger scale direct from farms but at the time, six was plenty! I have to say they are the friendliest hens I have ever had. Can be a bit feisty to our ducks if they feel that way on the day, but have definitely made good friends with our old two hens and enjoy scratching in the garden eating the slugs before planting started and roaming on the grass once they were aloud out free. I think they are enjoying life and are laying well at the moment so we do have some extra eggs in the Farm shop. Keep your eyes open.
