Musselburgh Update
harness racing supporters this is possibly the worst post I have had to write .
I have just had a email from Bill Farnsworth general manager of Musselburgh racecourse to say that they have made they decision that the famous Musselburgh pace will no longer be staged at the racecourse , his excuse is that the racecourse groundsmen need to take holidays and the only date they can have them is in the week when we run our race meeting , this is a ridiculous excuse in my opinion as we have move dates in the past 5 years from august to July and on to the racecourse preferred date in June ., the racecourse whilst blaming ground staff holiday would not offer any alternative dates whatsoever .
I have a email from Bill Farnsworth on the 21st of July 2021 offering a 3yr contract on the tracks preferred dates in June of which I accepted, the track said until the full list of there racing dates were returned from the BHA they would not be able to prepare the contract .
I have chased them on numerous occasions with no reply .
I have been on to local councillors since just after Xmas and the councillors are bitterly disappointed with the racecourse as the racetrack has been used for harness racing since 1893 , the councillors have taken it on themselves to contact Musselburgh and it’s new leaseholders Chester Racecource to raise the issues on the historical values of harness racing at the track but the reply from Musselburgh was we need to move on with the times and there staff holidays are more important.
The truth of the matter is that the general manager mr Bill Farnsworth just doesn’t want harness racing at the track in the future , I did explain to him that the harness racing people will not just walk away without a fight .
It is a sad day that Musselburgh harness racing will not be taking in 2022 and as unless something changes in the Racecource management harness racing is not in future plans of the racecourse committee .
