I encourage competition... Why? I honestly think it makes you grow as a person. It takes bravery, it takes preparation, it takes discipline and most of all it takes the willingness to lose. 50% of people lose their first match... every single person is worried about how they will look, how it will effect them.... but it won't... it just doesn't.... I remember asking one of my athletes to look around the room and out of 350 athletes in the hall, point one single person out that had lost their match... he couldn't. No one cares. It is that simple. people are too worried about what other people think (me included - I'm not immune to this). I encourage people to do better than me, to surpass me. Do better, be better and most of all focus on your preparation prior to competition leading to your own performance on the day, nothing else matters and you cannot control it, therefor it is not worth the effort in thought.

**** KIDS CLASSES STARTING SOON 8-14+years *****

Since opening, we have exclusively been focused on Adults first, why?.... because I was never in this for the money. I wanted training partners, I wanted people that could help me improve, that could test me, that could keep me safe whilst training and understood how a training room and environment is meant to be.

I have achieved that.

5 x Scottish champs in three years and officially the second best white belt in the UK according to UKBJJA rankings out of the smallest and newest BJJ club in the Highlands.

I never settle, it is time for the next step. Honestly, I don't care if we start with 1 person in our kids class, or 2 people, or more... I know that the moment people start to see what our environment is like, it will be infectious, it will spread to other people. So far, we have maintained an excellent reputation for our adults: safe, competitive and SMART with our training (not trying to kill each other) - the TECHNICAL competence has improved amongst every single person walking through our doors.

It is now our time to move this onto the next generation. I'll be teaching things that I WISH I knew when I was in school, your child can have these skills - and I mean SKILLS, not just a grinding room for little kids.

One of the things I enjoy most about Jiu-Jitsu is that the deeper you go, the more you realise how much there is still to learn.

Last weekend Kenny Baker shared some outstanding concepts around top pressure. Not just techniques, but the underlying principles that make pressure work in the first place.

The older I get, the more I value that kind of knowledge.

A technique might solve one problem. Understanding the principle behind it can improve your entire game.

One thing I've noticed over the years is that the people who make the most progress aren't always the most talented. They're usually the people willing to remain students.

They ask questions.

They stay curious.

They travel to seminars.

They expose themselves to different ideas.

They never assume they've got it all figured out.

That's something I hope we continue to build at North Coast.

Not a room full of experts.

A room full of people who are still learning.

Huge thanks to Kenny for taking the time to share his knowledge with us.

Looking around the room recently, I've realised we're in a strange stage of growth as a club.

For a long time, we had a core group of experienced competitors pushing each other every session. At the same time, we're now welcoming more brand new people than ever before. Some are preparing for competition, some are looking to get fitter, some are building confidence, and others are simply trying something completely new for the first time.

Balancing those two worlds isn't always easy.

The reality is that we're not quite big enough yet to have separate classes for every level, but we're no longer the small club we once were either. We're somewhere in the middle, building towards something bigger.

My goal has always been the same. I want a room where complete beginners feel welcome on day one, while competitors have the support and environment they need to chase ambitious goals.

I'll be honest, there are times when I wonder if we're getting the balance right. I want our competitors to thrive, but I also want every beginner to feel welcome. Building both at the same time is harder than people realise.

When I look around the mats though, I can see the direction we're heading.

One day we'll have dedicated beginner programmes, dedicated competition sessions, and clear pathways for everyone. Until then, we'll keep doing what we've always done: showing up, helping each other improve, and building the culture that got us here in the first place.

Very rare I get the chance to be in a team photo.

When I look around this room, I don't see competitors, hobbyists, beginners, kids, parents, or experienced grapplers.

I see a team.

My goal has never been to build a handful of stars. It's to raise the standard of everyone who walks through the door.

The best competitors should be free to chase knowledge wherever they can find it, then bring it back and lift the people around them. The beginners should feel supported. The quieter members should feel valued. Nobody should feel left behind.

A lot of clubs judge themselves by their top line. Their best athlete. Their medal count. Their standout few.

I think a club should be judged by its average.

Five elite competitors and fifty people struggling isn't a strong room.

A room full of people improving together, helping each other, and genuinely wanting the best for one another?

That's something worth building.

I'm proud of the atmosphere we are creating here.
