STAR ⭐ BADGERS 🦡 This week my shiny stars are lovely mum & daughter swim duo Maye & Becky. It’s Becky’s birthday today so this is a special shout out to you both to have a wonderful day ⭐️💙⭐️💙
Maye’s Story:
“After moving to Pembrokeshire from Nottingham and hearing my mam share all her adventures and shenanigans of wild swimming and life by the coast, I thought, why not? I joined a session to learn about tides, rips and currents ... then ended up heading to Solva for a dip 😅 Then I was hooked!
Four and a half years later, I’ve dipped in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales 😍 For me, dipping isn’t just about the cake and chips afterwards (though that’s a good incentive! 😆) Dipping, especially in the sea, has become an important tool in my mental health toolkit. It’s my escape from the stresses of life and work; just being in the sea, feeling free, listening to the waves, the gentle hum of nature, the birds and just floating and enjoying the peace around me. For me wild swimming is nature’s reset.
The badges are a little reminder of my small wins, big achievements, and every dip I’ve completed. The badges from the dips I’ve done with my mam are especially special ... they capture the T-Rex arms, the shrieks, the laughter, and all the shenanigans that made those moments so memorable.
My mam, Becky ...
Why do I dip? For me, cold water swimming stills my mind, from all the anxiety, worry and overwhelm which clamours for my attention simultaneously. It stills my mind. Being in and with the water; an ‘eye line view’ as rain meets the water, or how hail pauses and is held on the surface or how the surface trembles and oscillates in the wind. This is why I swim to observe and touch these liminal spaces.
When we dip together, there is a shared bond of silliness, bravery and courage. Each is supporting and encouraging the other to do what is right for them in that moment. It’s become our narrative.
The swim buddy badge encapsulates the unity that can only happen when, without expectations or demands, you and I meet for a dip.”
