Morning all, as there’s no class later, I thought I’d share a little challenge for you.

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and close your eyes. Lift one foot off the ground so that your knee is level with your hip, and see how long you can hold the position before you have to put your foot down.

No peeking, make sure your eyes are firmly closed.

If you can make it to 30 seconds, leave a thumbs up.

The Last Stand of the Shogunate.

This incredible photograph from the Boshin War (c. 1867–1868) captures a pivotal "cross over" in Japanese history. It features soldiers of the Tokugawa Shogunate standing at the threshold of a new era.

What makes this image so powerful is the visible clash of cultures.

The Transition
You can see the shift from traditional samurai culture to modern military life.

The Hairstyles
Many of the men still sport the traditional chonmage (topknot).

The Weaponry
While some wear Western-influenced uniforms, they still carry their katana, the iconic soul of the samurai.

These men were part of the final defense of the Shogunate against Imperial forces. Looking into their eyes, you see a world about to change forever.

Part 1.

Takada Racecourse (1924).

Produced by Tokyo Asahi Shimbun, it is an 8-minute-long black-and-white silent movie.

This is a record of an outdoor play called “Takada Racecourse,” filmed at the Okuma Auditorium garden of Waseda University. The vendetta tale of Nakayama Yasubei.

Despite being an outdoor performance, it is a valuable document that allows us to glimpse one aspect of the Shinkokugeki stage theatre.

It intended to reaffirm the history of how modern theatre, born after the Meiji period, expanded the possibilities of cinematic expression during a transformative era in Japanese film.

As a young aspiring budōka, the grandfather of my teacher was always a source of inspiration. Yasugi Kuroda was the real deal, a true swordsman with seemingly endless exploits. From cutting the barrel of a pistol pointed at his friend, to refusing to alter his teaching even under the American occupation after the Second World War, his resolve never wavered.

Sadly, he died the year I was born, so I never had the opportunity to meet him. However, I came to know him through the stories told of him, and through the love and compassion shared by his grandson.
