That Was The Weekend That Was

5 seniors games over the two days of this weekend, with the 1s, 2s, 4s and Womens 1st Team in action.

We start with Sunday where the 4th XI made light work of a home league clash with Tintwistle. George Bernard's persistance line, length and a wee bit of nip bagging him a majestic 5/8. U13s Captain Dan picking up 3/7 with Lucas and Henry getting 1 apiece as Tinsle were 41 AO. Stan's 12* guiding us to the win.

The Women's 1s had an agonising 1 run loss to Saddleworth. LGB, Annie and Iris all took 2 apiece as Saddleworth set 283. An opening partnership of 30 from Annie and Jemima set us up nicely but from there we fell behind the rate. Joanne's 16 from 11 taking us close but short by 1.

On Saturday, better news from the Womens 1s as they raced past Stayley. Our 303 proving far too big a total for the visitors with Iris and LGB in the wickets as they got 228.

A win yesterday for the 2s too who beat Stalybridge by 7 wickets. A fine opening partnership with the ball between Michael Scott and Alice had SCC at 61/6. Their lower order went hard at the ball and despite Paddy (2fer) and Norris picking up scalps they climbed to 140.

Phill Rowston though, made light work of that. An innings of 91 which featured all of the tickles through backward point and brutish straight drives you could possibly want. A bonus point win.

For the 1s, Mo Saqib's 5fer looked to have kept Stand within reach at 141 but it was not to be as a middle order collapse saw us well short.

THE TALE AT TEA

At The MCG, the 2s are full of a superb biryiani and have bowled Stalybridge out for 140. Skipper Scott with 5/52 off 14 overs well supported by Paddy and Alice's 2fers.

On the road, the 1s have Stand have 137/9 at time of writing. Mo with 4/25.

Junior Round-Up

An early exit from the Girls Softball cup as a side featuring 3 U10s and a debutant in Grace battled hard against Wythenshawe.

Megan (2/5) and Lydia (1/8) were the pick of the bowlers. Erin’s fine run out was the highlight in the field as the hosts batted cleverly, keeping the singles flowing.

Maisie batted nicely with an nice array of cover drives but we didn’t match WCC's scoring and despite Megan’s best efforts in Pair 4 we fell short.

Halfway through our debut season with a Girls Hardball Team, Sunday saw a strong performance even in defeat to a disciplined Cheadle Hulme side.

The visitors got full value from a good batting track, scoring a daunting 268 even with Megan (2/6) again in metronomic form and Charlotte D difficult to get away for 1/10.

Whilst we never looked likely to have the hitting power required to chase 70, we batted with patience, with Dollie’s straight drive for 4 the talk of the patio. We only lost one more wicket than our experienced opponents and batted with good application.

On Monday, a bowling performance for the ages saw the U11s defeat Denton West.

We looked to have been thoroughly undone by West who attacked the stumps and took 10 wickets as they held us to 228. Benedict’s 24* vital in giving us a positive score.

Challenged to somehow defend 228, the 11s did. Oscar got the ball rolling with a wicket in the first over before Saul’s 2/4 ensured things were dead level at halfway. Dollie’s 3/10 broke things wide open with two clean bowled dismissals and a tough caught and bowled.

All that set up a grandstand finish with Benedict and Oliver asked to defend a lead of 10 in the last four overs. Oliver’s pace kept West on the back foot and Benedict’s glorious spell of 3/5 killed any chance of West sneaking home.

For the U9s, 1 win and 1 defeat on an encouraging Sunday AM.

For the Reds, a confident performance with early wickets restricting Ashton to 235. This was overhauled thanks largely to James and Ryan going full Bazball.

A pleasing performance for the Blues despite Friends taking the win. Arthur and Niamh bowled tidily and Mejeve's 6 was a big highlight.

Sunday 7th June | You win some, you lose some, you watch it rain at some

Stephen Scott's 4th XI won a thriller at home to New Mills with a heavy contingent of U13s and U15s making up the side.

Batting 1st, Mottram were in trouble early doors before a gritty, resilient partnership between Dave Green (50*) and U13s skipper Dan (20) lifted us to a defendable 115.

With the ball, everyone chipped in during the early and middle overs as Skipper Ste, Callum and Lucy (1st senior wicket) took a wicket apiece.

Thomas Fletcher also took his 1st senior wickets as his 2fer but New Mills on the back foot, from 50/3 to 70/5.

With New Mills closing in on the target, enter Henry and Dan. Bowling excellently in tandem, Dan took 3 and Henry 2 to ensure New Mills were held off.

For the Womens 1s, defeat in tricky conditions up at Moorside. Batting first Mottram never got going in our usual style and Imogen's tidy 11* was the main score of note in our 238.

Sharon, Joanne and Steph took wickets to keep us interested but Moorside always had room to maneouvre and won by 28.

For the 3s half a game, tea and then home. 141 scored with Andy Willerton fluent for 33, Mitch Wood obdurate for 14 and Sam Faz hard hitting for a quick 22. West's chase cancelled by the rain.
