Why is consistency important?
You often hear the phrase “consistency is key” when it comes to fitness, and the best way I can think of to explain why? is to show you first hand.
Here are a few pictures of me during my own battle with weight loss (brace yourself). So, lets explain…
Picture 1 – 82kg. The stage I was at where I knew something had to change. This is when I started working out and enquired about my own personal trainer. I was the heaviest and most unfit I have ever been.
Picture 2 – 67.6kg. Exactly 1 year and 6 months after the first picture. At this point, I had been going to the gym for 11 months BUT only had become a client to my own PT for 8 months and the biggest change happened after becoming a client. The accountability alone enabled me to stick to the basic foundations that I had been cheating myself of. I would keep track of the basics in a little notepad, which jokingly became my little bible. The daily check-ins and the weekly face-to-face interactions, along with 3 weekly updates to my measurements, gave me the real boost and determination to be consistent and make my new habits a routine. I became the fittest and strongest I had been since my teens and was so much happier in myself.
Picture 3 – 77.8kg. Now. Since March this year I fell away from my fitness a little (okay maybe a lot!). I am not a PT client anymore, meaning that I no longer have that person there to answer to every week and therefore didn’t feel the want to work out as much (or AT ALL in this case) or even stick to my usual eating habits. I no longer had to keep track of my daily step count, which resulted in not wearing my apple watch anymore and because of this, the lunchtime walks ended, and the after-work runs were no longer even in my thoughts. Water intake? couldn’t tell you the last time I filled that water bottle up, but I could tell you I drank 3 cans of red bull yesterday. My routine was gone and those basic little foundations that had become second nature actions, are now the hardest things to kick start again.
So, in short, the progress I made that took 1 year and 6 months and a whole load of hard work, took just 5 months of inconsistency to undo almost all that progress. That is why consistency is so important! Its the little things that you do consistently that will make the biggest impact.
Luckily for me I have the knowledge gained from my former lifesaver of a coach that will allow me to get back to my stronger self, but I know there are some of you out there that still need that little accountability. If you feel you need the help, all you need to do is ask. I'm not where I want to be either, but I have already started making those changes. Message me if you would like any more info on my upcoming PT availability and allow me to help you too.
