🏰✨ Seaton Delaval Hall – Drama, History & Family Fun in Northumberland
If you love a day out with a mix of history, gorgeous gardens, and a dash of theatrical flair, Seaton Delaval Hall is a must visit! Just stepping onto the estate feels like walking into a story and with its dramatic past, stunning architecture, and beautiful grounds, there’s plenty for families to explore 🌿💛.
🏛️ A Hall with a Dramatic Past
Designed in 1718 by the legendary Sir John Vanbrugh (the same genius behind Blenheim Palace), Seaton Delaval Hall is a masterpiece of English Baroque architecture. Think:
• Theatrical turrets 🎭
• A striking triangular pediment 🔺
• Grand pillars and bold symmetry 🏛️
Even after a devastating fire in the 19th century, the central block still stands proudly, a dramatic reminder of the grandeur of early 18th century aristocratic life.
🔥 Intrigue, Fire & Restoration
The Delaval family were known for their eccentricity, parties, and colourful stories and the hall’s history is just as lively. After the fire, the estate fell into decline until the National Trust stepped in during 2009, beginning a huge conservation project to bring the hall and its gardens back to life 🌱✨.
It reopened to visitors in 2010, and today it’s a shining example of how historic estates can be lovingly restored for everyone to enjoy.
🌿 Gardens, Grounds & Norman Roots
The estate sits on the site of an ancient Norman settlement, and amazingly, the original Norman chapel is still intact and open for visitors to explore ⛪💫. It’s also used for arts events, heritage activities, and community gatherings giving it a lovely blend of old and new.
Around the hall, you’ll find:
• Beautiful, extensive gardens 🌸
• Peaceful woodland walks 🌳
• Seasonal events for families 🎉
• Plenty of space for kids to run, explore, and burn off energy 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️
🎨 Events & Family Fun
Seaton Delaval Hall often hosts:
• Outdoor theatre 🎭
• Seasonal trails 🌼
• Craft activities ✂️
• Heritage days and community events
There’s always something happening ensuring that little ones are kept entertained.
📅 Plan Your Visit
Opening times and events change throughout the year, so it’s best to check the National Trust website before you go 💻✨.
Seaton Delaval Hall is one of those places where history feels alive, dramatic, beautiful, and full of stories waiting to be discovered.

🌻🗺️ Local Love 🌻🗺️
Let’s show some local love for Northumberland cheese company! 🍃

If you’re looking for a cosy countryside outing with plenty to see (and taste), the Northumberland Cheese Company on the Blagdon Estate is a brilliant choice for families. This award winning dairy has been making artisan cheeses since 1984, starting with founder Mark Robertson’s very first ewe’s milk cheese, Redesdale. The range has grown over the years, but the heart of the business is still the same — great cheese made with care.Your visit starts at the Cheese Shop, packed with favourites like Northumberland Nettle and Oak Smoked. Upstairs, the Cheese Loft Café serves delicious lunches, cakes, and the famous Cheese Lovers Afternoon Tea. Everything on the menu uses cheese made right downstairs in the dairy.
🧑‍🍳 Dairy Tours - For curious kids (and grown ups), the Dairy Tour is a real highlight. One of the cheesemakers will guide you through the pasteurisers, vats, brining rooms, and stores before finishing with a tasty cheese sampling. Afterwards, you can relax in the café for a traditional afternoon tea — the perfect treat.
🥛 Where the Milk Comes From - Even as the dairy has grown, they still know exactly where their milk comes from. Their goat’s milk comes from a single Yorkshire herd, and their sheep’s milk from Lancashire — all part of their commitment to quality.
❤️ Why Families Love It - It’s relaxed, friendly, and full of flavour. Kids get to see how cheese is made, adults get to enjoy the tasting, and everyone leaves with something delicious. It’s a lovely Northumberland day out with a mix of learning, food, and countryside charm.
