This week our under 12s played away at Doncaster Knights.

Circumstance saw many of our team having to play out of their primary positions, yet despite this our Maroons got off to a flying start. The first 20 minutes were all Morley.

The next 20 minutes saw Doncaster come back into the game with Morley needlessly forcing play.

The final 20 minutes were largely even with Doncaster starting stronger and Morley finishing stronger.

The number of tries scored by both teams made it difficult to give an accurate final score and it was telling that neither team celebrated the final whistle thinking they had won.

Doncaster Knights are a formidable team and boast a sizable squad and that our somewhat, motley crew, turned up and gave them a nail biting game is testament the character of the Morley U12s.

All the boys played well with mentions going to Tomas and Zack for their big carries, Rome for leading the team by example and showing great maturity doing it and finally to Chazza for a great performance as full back.

This weekend Morley took the trip to play a three way fixture against Wortley RUFC and Sheffield Tigers.

In the U12s age bracket, Sheffield Tigers are up there with the best teams in Yorkshire. Needless to say this is always a big game for our U12s

Morley's first game was against Tigers 2nd team. The Maroons started well dominating play and creating half a dozen clear chances to score tries but failed to finish them, which with ominous foreboding, would come to haunt them in the second half. Tigers 2nd to their credit held on by their collective fingertips and then, against the run of play, scored a break away try. They followed this with another 2 tries against a now bewildered Morley who had found themselves somehow chasing the game despite their efforts. First game lost 3-0

Next Morley took on a strong and physical Wortley. Again the Maroons dominated play but this time they finished their chances when they came and kept Wortley from scoring, which is no mean feet. Game won 3 tries to nill.

The third and biggest game of the day was against Tigers 1st and by now Morley were more than ready to avenge last years close defeat. The narrowness of the pitches played to neither team's advantage so what followed was two very good teams battering at each other in a game of "who blinks first". In the end Tigers blinked and Morley took their chance with a great double switch, straight off the training pitch, resulting in a fantastic try. From then on it was Tigers chasing the game. The Maroons won again 3 tries to nill, although it felt like a much tighter match.

Every player for Morley had a great game (they needed to) but Will Jones and Max Oddy stood out for their aggression, work rate and commitment. Thomas Hewitt and Max Varley also had some magic moments that they can be proud of but again this was a whole team effort and a great scalp for the boys to take. Well done Morley UTM!

Morley U12s played at the Sandal festival this weekend in what was a roller coaster day for the boys.

The narrow pitches of the festival meant the U12s had to play out of their comfort zone. This resulted in a slow start for the first couple of games. Though they were defensively as strong as ever the U12s struggled finding the space to go round the corner.

It is testament to them that they didn't panic and instead changed tact and relied on a style of play that was far from their norm.

By the time Morley got to the knock out rounds for the Sandal shield, they fully had their house in order.
With tactics sorted and the bit between their teeth, the U12s went into their first quarter final game against a formidable, direct running, Wortley.

Morley took everything Wortley threw at them and then, in return, showed why they are such a dangerous team ball in hand. Game won 5-0.

The semi final put Morley up against Huddersfield who are a big set of lads who make up for a lack of speed with hard runners and competition at the rucks. By the semi finals the pitches had been widened allowing the Maroons to use the width to their advantage. Morley's running rugby sealed the deal 3-1

The final saw Morley pitted against Old Brods, a hard team on any day, let alone a final for silverware. Regardless of the pressure, and being cheered on by the lads of Sheffield Tigers, Morley took the game to Brods and by the end of the first half they were 2 tries up. The second half was a closer affair but the boys held strong by final whistle the Maroons had won 3-1.

A great day of rugby that saw the boys of the U12s learn how to adapt and handle big games with nerves of steel (the same cannot be said for the parents who looked as exhausted as the boys at final whistle). Well done U12s you've done yourselves and your club proud UTM.!
