1. Vase featuring a Crocodile breast feeding her young.
2. Daniel in the Lions Den Sculpture.
3. Bowl featuring a Man and Woman riding a Crocodile.
4. Model of Woman and Child carrying basket of produce.
5. Zulu Warrior Drinking Beer.
6. Man Playing Drum.
7. Pair of Elephant Head Crucifix candlesticks.
8. Zulu Family featuring male warrior and woman carrying child on her back. Base is an upturned cooking caldron.

1. Butterfly and flower with raised petals and bead like decoration.

a. Painted by Jabu Nene who joined Ardmore in 1990 at age 17 and produced may great works until 2020. Works independently at present.
b. Modeller unnamed.
c. Dimensions are just over 3“ high.

2. Butterfly and Protea Salt and Peper. Dated 1996.
a. Protea flower leaves in relief around the body.
b. Modelled by Makhekhe Madondo an early artist who did not remain long and I have no further information.
c. Painted by Winnie Nene at Ardmore Ceramics for the period of 1996-2020.
d. Dimensions are just over 3“ high

Zulu Sangoma’s (Witchdoctor) Bowl
And Honey Badger Bowl



1. Zulu Sangoma’s (Witchdoctor) Bowl
a. Date 20th. Century unknown. It is from the Nkandla Area District of Zululand.
b. Role of the Sangoma also known as Diviner. They wield a great deal of influence in Zulu culture. As they alone can mediate between people and their ancestral spirits.
c. Construction
i. Bowl is earthenware not thrown on a wheel but built up and shaped by hand.
ii. Firing has been done in hot open fires fuelled by resinous leaves of the Aloe plant that leaves a red finish.
iii. Black finish is achieved by enclosure in a heap of fast burning dry grass smoky fire.
iv. Decoration in this example is applied wire in geometric style. Originally beadwork would have been used.
v. Sculping / Modelling shows a snake in pursuit of a Frog in raised relief around the upper section of the bowl.
d. Use of Sangoma Bowl is for mixing traditional medicines for a variety of uses.
e. Size is of the Sangoma Bowl is 8” (20cm) diameter and 6” (15cm) high.

2. Honey Badger Bowl
a. Takes the Sangoma Bowl relief modelling to a new level with the Honey Badger in relief around the rim following the guide bird to a Honeycomb.
b. The bead like painted decoration reflecting Zulu traditional use of beads in decorating their pottery, Jewellery and clothing.
a. Date Sept. 2021
b. Modelled by Victor, Not sure of surname but I think it is Mtshali, joined Ardmore in 2018 and George Manyathela from Zimbabwe joined Ardmore in 2013 as a thrower.
c. Painted by Nozipho Primrose Ntshalintshali started as Ardmore artist in 2015 and was mentored by her mother Jabu Nene.
d. Size is of the Bowl is 6.75” (17cm) diameter and 3.5” (9cm) high.

This Zebra Bowl is Flat Eric’s favourite item as it is the only one where the predominant colour is yellow. It ranks alongside his favourite song Yellow by Cold Play and indeed Bananas as his choice of food.

1. Sculpted Zebra Bowl
a. Dated 2004
b. Made by Christopher Ntshalintshali.
c. Painting by Pinky at present I have no more information.
d. Size is of the Zebra Bowl is 10.5” (26.5cm) diameter and 3” (7.5cm) high at the Zebras ears.

• Interesting , unnatural, yellow and blue colour choice for the Zebras.
• Well sculpted head and necks rising out of the bowl’s side.
• Typical Ardmore flower and foliage inside and around the bowls sided and also flowing onto the base. Video is available Youtube David Ardmore Collector.

This Giraffe Lidded Bowl is superbly sculpted and painted. It lifts the item from being a small useful storage jar to a work of art.

1. Giraffe Bowl and Lid
a. Dated 2005
b. Made by Sabelo Khosa who started at Ardmore around 2003 as a sculptor and Thrower.
c. Size is of the giraffe Bowl is 6.5” by 5” at widest points and 6.5” high at the Giraffe’s ears.
d. Painting by Punch Shabalala who was 20 years old when she joined Ardmore in 1989. Her work is influenced by Zulu beadwork and KwaZulu-Natal’s Eastern heritage. Punch’s imaginative skill and attention to detail have brought joy to collectors worldwide

A lot of items produced for Ardmore are functional as is this Cheese / butter bowl.

The artwork in even the smallest item is a pleasure to have around the house.

1. Zebra Bowl and cover
a. Dated 1995
b. Painting by Phumelele is confirmed on the base. She is an early member of staff who joined in 1989 and I believe the 4th. employee.
c. Made by is not detailed but probably Phumelele Nene who is described as Sculptor, modeller and painter in the Ardmore Books.
d. She was also one who’s life was cut short during the Aids period.
e. Size of the bowl is is just under 10” diameter and 5.5” high at the Zebra’s ears.

Great design that is carried across the whole of the piece.
Raised lip base, colours of Zebra carried across to the lip.

A lot of items produced for Ardmore can be large and even monumental but the vast majority are small useful items and affordable for anyone who wants to start collecting.

The artwork in even the smallest item is a pleasure to have around the house.

I have selected 2 Pin Dishes as examples for your delight.
1) Caterpillar dish
a. Dated 2008
b. Made by Octavia Mazibuko joined in 1993 and sinse 2009 has been one of only 2 women working in the clay making studio.
c. Painted by Philile Nsele. Early member of staff and has helped by training a number of painters.
d. Size is 5.5” by 3.5” and only 1.5” high.

2) Hoopoe Dish.
a. Dated 2011
b. Unusual but 2 makers are listed. Lovemore Sithole from Zimbabwe Joined around 2007 and who has become the general production manager and main thrower. Qiniso Mungwe joined in 2010 and this Hoopoe piece is a great example of his delcate sculptural work.
c. Painted by Goodness Mpinga. Joined Ardmore in 1992 and her work has become highly collectable.
d. Size is 5” diameter and 2” high to head of Hoopoe.
