Yesterday marked our annual show day, as our SAMT students performed in ‘Tonight Belongs To Us 2026’, and honestly, I don’t think I’ve quite found the words yet.
I’ve spent months putting these two (almost entirely different) shows together with more work and admin than I could ever imagine existed, but yesterday reminded me what it’s about. It’s about the people, the journeys, the confidence gained, the friendships formed. The moments where young people realise they’re capable of far more than they ever thought possible.
This year’s show felt particularly emotional. I watched children who once stood in tears because they were too nervous to perform, confidently take to the stage in so many numbers. I watched young people who doubted themselves only days earlier prove themselves wrong. I watched children support one another, lift each other up and celebrate each other’s successes.
I genuinely believe this was our strongest show yet, and I couldn’t be prouder of every single performer, or more grateful to every single parent, volunteer, technician, photographer, staff member and chaperone who made it possible.
The phrase ‘Tonight Belongs To Us’ has always meant a lot to me. Every year we use that song for our final bows, but yesterday it felt more meaningful than ever.
✨ It belonged to the child stepping on stage for the very first time.
✨ It belonged to the child taking their final bow after years with us.
✨ It belonged to the child who was too nervous to perform a few years ago and now lights up the stage.
✨It belonged to the child who got something wrong, kept smiling and carried on anyway.
✨ It belonged to the soloists who bravely stood alone in the spotlight and performed so brilliantly.
✨ It belonged to the friends cheering each other on from the wings.
And for me, it belonged to every young person who has found confidence, friendship, happiness and a place to belong through SAMT.
I set out to create the kind of place I would have loved as a child, and yesterday I was reminded just how special it is to watch young people find their confidence, find their people and find a home.
I often say how proud I am of them, but the truth is they have given me just as much as I hope I’ve given them. Most of the time, teaching is planting seeds and hoping they’ll grow. But yesterday, I got to walk through the most beautiful garden and see what had grown.
To every single person who is either part of the SAMT family, or just supports us in what we do - thank you for allowing me to do what I love.
And yesterday, for a few emotional and truly magical hours…
Tonight Belonged To Us. ❤️
