Goal setting (part 2)

Following on from yesterdays SMART goal setting, here’s the tail end…

A: Achievable. ‘A’ can also mean agreed if you’re working with a mentor/ coach, but for the purpose of self coaching its ‘Achievable’. So ask yourself is the goal that you’ve specified realistically achievable? Aiming high is admirable but only when its attainable.

R: Recorded: ‘R’ can be ‘realistic’ when working with a mentor/ coach, but for the benefits of self coaching its ‘Recorded’. This should work hand in hand with measurable. Measure, track and record progress. Identify points where you begin to plateau or progress dips and take action. If you don’t track progress you won’t know how far along you are on your journey or if you’ve made a wrong turn and need some course correction.

T: Timed. Every journey has an end. Make sure you plan for yours to be within a set time period or you could be wandering for a very long time. Having time restraints allows you to prioritise, helps you to pick yourself up and try harder when you might subconsciously be coasting and gives you a boost when you’re hitting targets along the way.

I hope this helps you start to plan your own personal journey to self improvement. If you would like to help shape future posts from me or have any ideas that may help others send me a PM and I’ll do my best to post about them.

Stay positive, smile and be good

STEP 2: Goal Setting (part 1)

There are many different ways of goal setting and even more methods of implementation once those goals have been set. Im going to look at probably the most commonly known goal setting tool and that is the SMART acronym.

It’s a tool used in business planning as well as setting personal goals and is set out as such:

S: Specific. Make your goals as specific as possible. Eg. If your goal is ‘I want to get fit’ or ‘I want to lose weight’ then try to work out how much weight you want to lose or what level of fitness are you aiming for. Being specific allows you to set definitive goals and not just head in a general direction for an undefined finish line.

M: Measurable. Try to make that specific goal you’ve decided on measurable. If you’ve decided that you want to lose weight, that weight has been specified as 8 pound and you can measure that by standing on some scales. If you’ve decided to improve your fitness, your specific goal can be to get a resting heart rate of 75 bpm and you can check this by wearing a heart rate monitor or checking your pulse when at rest.

Will get part 2 up tomorrow 👍

Planning

Ever heard that saying; Poor planning leads to poor performance? Completely true. Whether you’re trying to lose weight, get fit, improve productivity or work on any other aspect of improving your life. Now you could wing it and try and get where you’re going, but how will you know if you’re getting there or if you’re taking the most effective route?

Think of a weight loss/ self development journey like any other journey you might make. If you were heading to Cardiff for the weekend would you jump in the car and just randomly drive till you saw signs for Cardiff? Would you stop occasionally and ask a stranger ‘is this the road to Cardiff?’ Or would you take a moment to find out the post code for the exact location of your destination, type that into sat nav and have a step by step guide set out for you? You’d even have course correction given to you if you make any wrong turns, alternative routes planned if you hit road closures and a set time/milage so you can see exactly where you are on your journey. Doesn’t that sound like a more effective method of getting somewhere when you’re not sure of the way?

Think of that analogy when you’re looking at achieving your next goals. I’ll do my best to try and help through each stage of the way.

STEP 1: Identify what your goal is.

The key to success

What are your goals? For some it’s weight loss, others it may be muscle gain, improving cardiovascular health, injury rehabilitation, mobility, flexibility or something completely different. Whatever your own personal goal may be, what is the key to success?

Well, it’s definitely not ‘one simple online trick that all PTs don’t want you to know about as it’s putting them out of business’. Nor is it eating ‘this one strange thing each day to improve all aspects of your life’. The good news is it’s much simpler than that, doesn’t cost a thing and is achievable by all. The bad news for most is that it requires work… consistent work.

The key to success is CONSISTENCY. Just show up and keep showing up. Do something positive. Anything. That single two hour workout you did that one time ain’t gonna get you those goals. That one week you ate fresh, wholesome food and didn’t have a drink won’t either. But turning up every day and doing your best will, if you’re consistent. Even if you don’t feel like it, even if you’re tired; do something… and keep doing it.

You’ve got this 💪

Group training … breaking down barriers together 💪🤜💥🤛

Some of you may know that teaching group exercise is a big part of what I do. While I love working one on one with clients to help them attain their personal goals and identify and overcome limitations, group exercise lets me motivate and guide much more people.

Sometimes I’ll join in with classes. This helps as participants get to see a live demonstration as they exercise, they are motivated to continue working and sometimes the camaraderie helps make everything more fun…. And competitive (if that’s your thing).

Sometimes I focus 100% on the participants. Help correct their technique, give alternatives if they’re struggling or finding it too easy, or offer encouragement and guidance at a more personal level.

Most of the time it’s a mixture of the 2. I tend to be guided by the needs of others and react accordingly. That’s the advantage of attending a group exercise class with a qualified instructor. They’re there for your needs and will encourage and adapt the workout for your requirements… and you get to work together with others aiming for the same or similar goals.
