🟡🔵MATCH REPORT🔵🟡
Glenburn v Cumnock Synergy Cup Final
Venue: Synergy Arena, Kilmarnock
Date: Saturday 13th June 2026
Kick-off: 10:30
Two well respected teams that knew each other well met at the Synergy Arena in Kilmarnock for the Synergy Cup Final 🏆 on a morning that brought spells of sunshine with the possibility of showers.
As supporters arrived at Townholm, home of Bonnyton Thistle and the Synergy Arena, there was a respectful tribute positioned outside the spectators’ entrance, with several people taking a moment to stop and pay their respects before making their way into the ground.
The Miners having played so well throughout the competition would find themselves victims of an unfortunate set of circumstances before a ball was even kicked, with four key players unavailable, defender Kai Kennedy & goalkeeper Lucas Stirling are at the World Cup 🏴 with midfielder Tommy Stuart and striker Luke McMahon cup tied 😢
SYFA rules also made it virtually impossible to get an emergency loan goalkeeper, meaning Sam MacPherson had to play in goals, leaving our 17-man squad with only 12 outfield players available.
The Miners however started the game like Usain Bolt from the starting blocks. From kick-off, Fletcher McLurkin hit a long diagonal ball to the right side of midfield, Harry Templeton won an important header flicking on for the overlapping Lewis Taylor who drove forward on the wing before delivering a curling cross into the back post area where, Declan Carlyle’s blocked shot found Zac Aiton about 12 yards out, who rifled the ball into the back of the net ⚽️ to put Glenburn 1-0 ahead with probably about 10 seconds on the clock – faster that Usain Bolt really !
The lead, however, lasted only briefly. Cumnock responded quickly and equalised ⚽️ after just two minutes, when Glenburn had tried and failed twice to clear in the box.
Conceding so early after an ideal start clearly upset The Miners allowing Cumnock settle into the game and start putting Glenburn under a bit of pressure.
Glenburn had a chance to regain momentum in the seventh minute when they won a free kick on the edge of the area, but Declan Carlyle’s effort went over the bar. A minute later, Cumnock threatened from a corner, though the delivery carried over without troubling the goalkeeper, the ruffle down the back of the net led some spectators to think the ball had gone straight in.
Cumnock then took control of the scoring with goals in the 11th ⚽️ and 16th ⚽️ minutes, turning the match around to lead 3-1 giving them a huge psychological advantage so early in the game.
To their credit though The Miners lifted themselves and started competing with more aggression and belief all over the park, they dug in and started to create more attacking opportunities with the ball on the deck.
The Miners created a clear chance in the 19th minute when Zac Aiton was played through on goal and went down under a challenge in the box and Cumnock cleared the ball for a throw-in which was taken quickly to Declan Carlyle, whose cross narrowly evaded Zac Aiton as he tried to get on the end of it at the near post.
There was another big moment on 25 minutes when after a period of good pressure Glenburn got numbers in the box and only a fingertip save on the goal line denied Declan Carlyle, with Glenburn unable to force the loose ball home.
Five minutes later, Glenburn had an indirect free kick just inside the 18-yard box after Cumnock tapped the ball back to their keeper to collect under pressure from Glenburn. The free kick was lifted towards the front post and saved easily by the Cumnock keeper 🧤
The Miners kept chipping away for the rest of the half and perhaps deserved to pull one back, but finishing was just not clinical enough
HT 3:1
Into the second half and going by the way the first half had ended the young Miners looked as though they still had enough in the tank and enough belief to get themselves back in the game.
Those hopes were dashed though just 5 minutes after the restart when Cumnock struck again on 40 minutes ⚽️ to make it 4-1, leaving Glenburn with a difficult task after the break despite having created several promising moments of their own.
It was probably at this moment the belief started draining from some of the lads, which proved to be the case when Cumnock then extended their advantage shortly after the restart, scoring in the 42nd minute ⚽️ to move 5-1 ahead.
Glenburn responded with a free kick on 50 minutes, but the effort was saved 🧤 as they continued to search for a way back into the match.
The Miners showed determination to keep competing, particularly in defence as the boys were all now sitting fairly deep, determined not to concede again and trying to set up counter attacks.
On 63 minutes, Devlin Harker produced a strong acrobatic block to stop an effort on goal, before Cumnock followed up with a powerful shot on goal from the rebound bringing out an excellent save from Sam MacPherson to prevent further damage 🧤
Cumnock added a sixth goal ⚽️ in the 66th minute, (The number of the beast on the 13th on the month !!??) rounding off a clinical performance and confirming their grip on the final, after their left winger received the ball out wide and distant from goal, he sent in a shot which sailed over Sam MacPherson and into the net.
Final score: Glenburn 1-6 Cumnock
Well done to Cumnock Juniors Boys Club 2013s - Synergy Cup winners 🏆
Glenburn made an excellent start through Zac’s early finish, but Cumnock’s quick equaliser changed the rhythm of the match, and they went on to take their chances well.
Glenburn competed right to the end, having their own chances in several attacking moments with the backline and Sam MacPherson producing important defensive contributions but Cumnock’s clinical finishing proved decisive.
The Glenburn 2013 first full competitive season is at an end and the boys have developed well as individual players and as a team, coming second in the league by the narrowest of margins and going deep into all the cup competitions, having only lost less than 5 games in total, with two of those on penalties and the others usually by the odd goal in three, todays defeat might seem like a freak result therefore, and much as we could blame circumstances, we learn more about ourselves in defeat than we do in victory and I am sure we will be even stronger next season 💪🏻
All the boys are a huge credit to their parents and the coaches, who have moulded their skills and awareness to set them on the right path as not only exciting footballers but responsible citizens.
Huge thanks to Ryan Douglas, David Carlyle, Roddy McDonald & Mr Glenburn Louis Anderson.
Thank you to Eddie Wallace for the great photos 📷
The boys rounded off the day and the season with a great party at Prestwick cricket club 🏴 – No Glenburn – No Party
