A good few years after we last attended a tournament, we made the trip to Dundee Ice Arena this past weekend for the Denis Lemieux Invitational Tournament.

We ended up losing our semi but all still left satisfied with our performance.

Thank you to Tracy from The Mariners Ice Hockey Club and Scottish Ice Hockey for letting us attend and making a team outside their umbrella so welcome.

Here's hoping we get to go back!

That’s a lot of faces......and that’s just the tip of the ice berg

Warriors, Squaws, Renegades, Braves, Tomahawks, Mohawks, Arrows, Mischiefs, Dragons, Islanders, Wildcats (x 2), Coyotes, Predators, Jesters, Lightning, Nomads, Kings, Sharks

The name of the teams and the colour of the jersey may differ but the home is the same. Every single one calls Whitley Bay ice rink home

The government is currently choosing not to open Ice Rinks, grouping them in with leisure facilities such as Bowling alleys and Casinos. This is not a ‘pass time’. This is a sport, an Olympic sport, a sport where our Men’s team finally broke into pool A of the world championship and stayed there.

The Warriors won the league this season and interest in the sport at local level was high. A catalyst for many more to fall in love and become involved in our sport. Instead, COVID meant the rink shut the doors in March and we’re still not allowed back in.

For a sport that is already under supported financially and suffers from a lack of facilities this could be fatal. The longer the rinks are closed the more players, young or old, will gravitate away from the game. The longer the doors are shut the more rinks will become financially challenged and never re open

We’re allowed to go to the pub, given vouchers to encourage us to go to restaurants, even sit on a plane for hours on end to go on holiday........but we still can’t play hockey

The rinks have gone above and beyond to put measures in place to allow hockey players and our fellow skaters to return to the ice and, after many false starts, we’re still being told no

So please, share this post far and wide, sign the petitions, contact your MP, make as much noise as possible and support us in letting the government know what is at risk here

That’s a lot of faces......and this is just Whitley bay. Imagine this scene repeated at EVERY rink the UK. Help us save our sport!

Busy few weeks for the Nomads that has seen a run of away games in Hull, Nottingham and Billingham.

First up saw a hard-fought 6-5 win against KC Knights to make up for the narrow loss in the home fixture earlier in the year. Two weeks later, we travelled to Nottingham to face the Outlaws which saw the Nomads pipped 9-8 by the home team. Finally, we faced Cleveland Comets B at the Forum which ended in a 9-4 loss after a run of goals in the third period.

We thank all three teams for the games.

Merry Christmas to all our families, friends and followers from everyone at the North East Nomads. We look forward to see...

Interested in Ice Hockey?

Have you ever sat watching an ice hockey game, and wished you were part of the action?

Did you play through juniors or university, and want to get back involved?

Or, if you are not interested in playing, but would like to be involved with a team, but not sure how?

If you answered 'Yes' to any of the above, please drop us a message and we will see if we can help you in any way we can!

The Nomads return to competitive action tonight in our season opener, with the visit of the Northumbria Uni Kings 'B' Team who are preparing for their upcoming university league campaign.

We will also have two nomad debutants in Geoff and Lucas Tilly.

A game for all you night-owls with face off just after midnight, where we are considering renaming tonight's event in honour of birthday boy Kyle Done, any suggestions?
