End of Season Tournament vs Arbroath Youth Maroons.

We travelled down to Hercules Den on a sunny Tuesday evening to play Arbroath in our 3rd game of the End of Season Tournament.

To say this will be a tough game would be an understatement. Arbroath who are on the hunt for the treble having recently won the league and league cup have been the standout team at our Tier.

With the boys having played well on Sunday (once the coaches stopped tinkering with formation) the scene was set for a great game and boy it did not disappoint.

From the first minute both teams looked up for it. Arbroath showed immediately why they are league winners with some excellent football and determination showed however Monifieth more than matched them in every department . It was a back and forth first half with excellent football played by both teams but the superb defending particularly Monifieth prevented any clearcut chances being created.

Half Time 0-0

The 2nd half kicked off and much to the watching fans delight the standard of play somehow improved. Both teams were determined to win this game and came out flying from the kick off.

Both teams managed to create more chances now however the defences stood strong.

However, 15mins into the 2nd half the deadlock was finally broken. Arbroath were pushing forward looking for a breakthrough when once again they hit the wall that was the Monifieth Back 4. Monifieth retrieved the ball at the edge of their 18-yard box and in 4 fabulous 1 touch passes that ripped through Arbroath like a hot knife through butter the ball was out wide on the right wing. From out wide we whipped in a through ball onto the onrushing Leo who calmly finished into the bottom corner. What a goal to break the deadlock and well deserved.

Arbroath showed champion spirit and attacked straight from kick off, but Monifieth held strong again with a bit of help from the goal post.

With 5mins to go Arbroath drew level. Some nice play on their left wing they fired a ball across the face of goal, and they tapped in at the far corner to equalise.

Both teams were now desperate to win the game and pushed for a winner. After a back and forth Monifieth were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box (to the cries of penalty from the away fans). Glen stepped up looking for a repeat of Sundays Free Kick goal. He stepped up and struck the ball well, but the keeper was equal to it and saved down low…just, as it almost squeezed under him but he managed to hold on to it.

Then with 1 minute to go Leo was set through on goal. Just as he was away to slot the ball home the Arbroath midfielder appeared out of nowhere and pulled off the greatest tackle you will likely ever see. So good even the gutted away support were applauding!

As the final whistle approached Monifieth were awarded a free kick that was to be the last attack. Everyone of the Monifieth Team stormed into the box. The cross was fired in, and it was attacked by the Monifieth players. Unfortunately after a bit of ping pong the ball was finally cleared much to the fans disappointment and the final whistle blew.

Full time and the game finished 1-1 which was probably the fair result for a game that both teams gave everything.

Well done to both Teams on possibly the most exciting 1-1 draw in the history of football.

To say the coaching team are proud of the boys would be a massive understatement. It was a 10/10 performance from each and every boy and we couldn’t ask for more.

Finally, congratulations to Arbroath on the League and League cup Victory and good luck next season…hopefully we can prevent the Treble though!!

Final League game of the season.

It was an early morning trip over to St.Andrews for our last league of the season.

Having not played St Andrews this season we weren’t sure what to expect however recent result had been really good for them so we had a feeling it would be a tough game.

Straight from the kick off they proved it was going to be just that as they pushed forward with real intent and we struggled to get a grip of the game.

As the half went on it became evident the coaching team’s decision to experiment with a new 3-4-3 wasn’t working. The excellent wingers of St Andrews and their blistering pace was catching us out over and over again. Reverting back to 4-4-2 steadied the ship and we managed to get to half time all square.

Half time 0-0

At half time we decided to match them up with a 4-3-3 and try and get a bit more control of the ball. From the kick off the boys seemed to be far more comfortable and it didn’t take long for our pressure to pay off.

Charlie who was now in inspired form tormented their full back from right wing causing their defender to punt a clearance towards the centre of the pitch. Jacob who was now sitting in the CDM role pulling the strings stepped forward onto the bouncing clearance and lobbed the keeper from 35 yards. What a goal to break the deadlock.

0-1 Monifieth

Charlie once again picked the ball up on the right wing and drove into the box. The ball found its way to Thomas who controlled the ball and turned in one motion (like a prime Zidane) before finding space in the box and slotting it into the left hand corner of the net. Another fantastic goal.

0-2 Monifieth

The boys kept pushing forward and were well in control of the game now. As we pressed forward we were given a free kick from the edge of the box. The crowd were all screaming for Glen to step up and he was more than happy to do so. Glen stepped up and fired the ball under the wall and into the bottom corner. A Ronaldinho special! A hatrick of wonder goals.

0-3 Monifieth

As the game went on we seemed to tire and in typical Monifieth Fashion we made it more difficult for ourselves than needed.

St Andrews scored and then quickly scored again to make it a nervy end to the game. Thankfully the boys held out well and finished the game with a well deserved victory.

Full time 2-3 Monifieth Reds

A massive well done to all the boys for finishing their first league of competitive football. Finishing a very respectable 5th place and constantly improving as the season went on. 👏👏👏

We still have the end of season tournament to play so one last big push lads 👍👍

23.03.25

Today we played our first game of the end of season tournament. We welcomed DUSC down to Riverview to start the league section of the tournament.

Having only played each other a couple of weeks ago and it being a close 1-0 victory for us we knew this would be good game and the lads were really up for it.

In a flash Monifieth showed just how much they were and took the lead in the first minute. Charlie picked up the ball out wide and skinned their full back. Fortunately for us his cross took a wicked deflection and sneaked by their goalie into the net!

1-0 and what a start.

Monifieth kept up the pressure and were having most joy via the wings and particularly through an inspired Charlie. Charlie was giving their full back a torrid time and whipped in 4 or 5 dangerous crosses but it just wouldn’t fall for his team mates. Much to the amazement of the home fans.

Finally the 2nd goal arrived. Ethan picked up the ball around the half way line beat a player then split the defence in 2 with a through ball for the on rushing Charlie. Charlie picked up the ball dribbled through on Goal and rounded the keeper to poke the ball home. A fantastic and well deserved goal.

2-0

DUSC were still causing problems but thankfully Jamie and Glen were solid as a rock and on great form.

HT 2-0

The 2nd half started and DUSC came out all guns blazing. They were really applying the pressure and we were struggling to get a grip of the game again.

Finally the pressure was too much. Some nice play by DUSC and a good through ball left them 1 on 1 with Eddie and their player slotted the ball into the net.

2-1

DUSC tails were now up and they were really pushing for an equaliser and unfortunately they got it. What appeared to be a bit of a hopeful lob from 25 yards flew over Eddie and into the top corner.

2-2 game on!!

After the fright of the equalizer we seemed to settle down and start playing like we had in the first half. (Thank god 🙏🏻) We were now finding space on the left wing and gained a corner. The corner was driven into the box and fell perfectly for Glen who tapped home. Glen then possibly pulled off the most laid back celebration as his team mates went berserk. 😂

The remaining 15 mins (which should have been 10) was back and forth however the better chances probably fell to us as we held on to a well deserved win.

Full time 3-2 to Monifieth.

Great result for the boys today a great team performance showing grit and determination to get the win.

Well done boys 👍

vs DUSC 2012s

We welcomed DUSC down to Monifieth this week on league duty.

With storm warnings for the area it was going to be a tough day for football again. (seems to be a common theme 🙈)

The wind had picked up and the temperature had dropped however the boys spirits were up and they were keen to get started.

The return of 2 boys from last week along with our new signings Glen and Lucas numbers were much more acceptable this week.

There was a few changes to the line up this week after some fantastic performance in training by some lads. The boys took to the field in a strong looking line up.

With the wind at our backs from kick off we pressed our advantage immediately and took charge of the game.
We were mostly camped in the DUSC half and on the 9th minute we were rewarded for our efforts. Some nice play on the wing from a throw the ball fell to Kieran who whipped in a cross. The ball skipped passed Ethan and their defender and bounced through to Jacob. Jacob struck it beautifully on the volley into the back of the net leaving the keeper no chance.

1-0

Half way through the 1st half the subs were sent on with instruction to shoot on site to try and increase our advantage whilst we had the wind at our backs. Unfortunately through a mixture of excellent defending and the ball just not falling for the boys it took until the last minute of the half that we could get a shot away. Joel picked up the ball from the 25 yards out and let fly. Unfortunately it just went wide.

HT 1-0

The second half kicked off and so did the storm. It was now freezing and the wind was now making it almost impossible to get out our half.
The ref actually considered calling the game at one point but we persevered through it.
The boys battled well and although stuck in our half didn’t look like losing a goal.
As the half moved on we started to come into the game and in the last 10mins started to look dangerous on the break.
A few chances came and went but unfortunately no goals for the freezing fans to cheer.

FT 1-0 to the reds.

An excellent team performance and second clean sheet in a row for the lads.

Welcome to Glen and Lucas who have Joined us and we’re delighted to have them with us. 👍

Away trip to Fairmuir Park vs Maryfield Blacks

Apologies for the delay in the match report. The match reporter was with BT sports covering the Champions league so has been a bit busy 😜

This game was touch and go whether it would go ahead as we had 4 boys missing. It was looking like we would have to play with just 10 boys however our director of sport managed to pull together 2 excellent midweek signings and we had 12 boys available on match day.

The game started and both teams seemed up for the battle. Unfortunately the pitch was akin to a swamp so total football was was not going to happen.

It started evenly but Maryfield started to take charge of the game and were getting joy via there centre forward. It wasn’t long until Eddie was called into action and my word did he respond. Maryfield had 4 clear cut chances in the first half only to be thwarted by an inspired Eddie.
Without the slightest bit of exaggeration one save where he tipped it onto the bar was easily the best save I have seen this season at any level.
It wasn’t long before the crowd had renamed him Eddierson 😂😂

We had a couple of chances ourselves in the first half but unfortunately we just couldn’t convert them

HT 0-0

The second half kicked off in a similar fashion. Maryfield took control and we defended superbly throughout.
Again Eddierson pulled of 3or 4 wonder saves to keep us in it.
We certainly rode our luck as Maryfield missed a number of chances from within 10 yards as they thankfully couldn’t open the scoring.
With 2 mins left we almost sneaked the win but it just didn’t land kindly for Ethan.

FT 0-0

An excellent point for the lads and what a titanic effort from each one of them as we got a well deserved point on a very difficult week for us. I couldn’t be prouder

Well played to Maryfield who will be scratching their heads how they didn’t score.

Well done lads and especially our new hero Eddierson 👍👍👍

09.02.25

Today we travelled up to Kirriemuir to take on Kirrie Thistle.

Unfortunately we were well beaten by a much better team on the day.

Congratulations to Kirrie on their 5-0 victory avenging our 5-0 victory from earlier in the season.

Well just have to try and make up for it next week lads. 👍
