Roberttown Community Cycling Club

Welcome to Roberttown Community Cycling Club. We are a non-competitive village cycling club. We believe in cycling for all irrespective of ability.

Our aim is to provide a fun environment for the people of Roberttown and surrounding villages. We are a family orientated group catering for all levels of ability. We hope all the community will join us in promoting the health and social benefits of cycling. We aim to reflect the multi cultural area in which we live, and welcome everyone to join us.

Trail Thursday Ride Report 22nd October
Four cyclists at Roberttown Community Centre this evening but one of our club members forgot their helmet so only three were able to cycle. The weather was surprisingly cool but the early drizzle had stopped so ideal for cycling. The route began with some off road skill work across the fields by Taylor Hall Lane which was quite slippery. Then we made our way down Crossley Lane and Jill Lane to Dewsbury Country Park and the Spen Valley Greenway. We continued on past the Thornhill Recycling Centre and continued on the Greenway to Watergate Road. From here we made our way to Crow Nest park and a dark eerie ride through. Boothroyd Lane and Staincliffe Road took us into Heckmondwike for a short ride on the Spen Valley Ringway before making our way back to Roberttown. A shorter ride as we were not sure how good our lights were after missing a couple of weeks. Back for 8pm and 12 miles of cycling with over 1000 feet of climbing. Good to be out again, without traffic and riding at a social pace.
Cycling this evening were Karen, Reg and myself (Ken).

Roberttown B**r Bash 2026 Presentation Evening

On Saturday evening 17th October I attended the Roberttown B**r Bash Celebration Evening at Roberttown Community Centre. The hall was full with people from the many different groups within the local community. Roberttown Community Cycling Club were awarded a cheque for £250. I was fortunate to be able to accept the cheque on behalf of the Club and the club members who gave up their time on the day.

In a short presentation speech I outlined our rides throughout the week:-
Tuesdays 6:30pm Road Cycling, 15-20 miles, summertime only.
Thursdays 6:30pm Trail cycling, 12-20 miles, throughout the year.
Saturdays 8:30am (summer) 9am (winter) 25-50 miles or more.
All rides advertised on our page and all our rides begin at Roberttown Community Centre.

I also explained that the money received goes towards our community initiative, The Tour de Roberttown, which is aimed at children from 3-11 with their parents or responsible adult, for a ride around the Roberttown village, beginning on Commonside and finishing at the Community Centre where there are refreshments, Tombola and Raffle Prizes. There is no charge for entry and all children are awarded a small gift from the club as a celebration for taking part. Photos of the event are on our pages.

The next Tour de Roberttown will be on Wednesday 16th May 2027. Thank you from us to the Roberttown B**r Bash organisers.

Meet at Roberttown Community Centre for a 6:30pm departure. Please do not park in the Community Centre car park. The route will be decided on the night but will be suitable for road bikes with winter tyres, gravel bikes as well as mountain bikes. Lights will be necessary for the ride. Please put a comment if you intend to ride by 5pm so you can be contacted should the ride be cancelled.

🚴‍♀️ Roberttown Community Cycling Club – Ride Report 🚴‍♂️
📅 Saturday 17th October 2026
Seven riders turned out for our Saturday social ride, greeted by lovely autumn sunshine ☀️ Although it was quite chilly and never really warmed up, everyone came prepared and wrapped up well!

After discussing the ride options, everyone was happy to head towards Yeadon Airport for today's social ride.

Our seven riders were Karen, Caroline, Ian, Graham, Neil, Ken (our ride leader) and myself, Ali.

Also at the Community Centre were Jason, Wendy, Colin and Julie, who were heading off on the faster ride to Wetherby. 🚴

🚴‍♂️ The Route
Off we set from the Community Centre, heading along Windybank before crossing over to Harepark Lane. From there, we took a right through the housing estate onto Greenway, eventually coming off at Mount Street and riding across to Cliffe Lane for the first climb of the day! 💪

We continued through Gomersal and on to Birkenshaw, climbing Station Road to the roundabout before joining Tong Lane. A left turn at Roker Lane took us towards Calverley, crossing Bradford Road along the way.
Next came the climb through Horsforth Vale, followed by the back roads of Rawdon before we finally arrived at Yeadon Airport.
☕ Time for a well-earned breakfast stop! We took a break to refuel, have a catch-up and enjoy a bit of social time before heading back.
🌳 The Return Journey
After breakfast, we returned via Apperley Bridge, joining the Leeds–Liverpool Canal before leaving at Thackley.
From there, we followed our usual route back through Bradford, along the Greenway and up through Bowling Park to complete our ride.
All in all, approximately 40 miles round trip — a great effort from everyone, especially given the chilly conditions!
👏 A great ride with great company! Well done to all seven riders for another enjoyable day out on the bikes.

Meet at Roberttown Community Centre for a 8.30am departure. The ride will be decided by the cyclists at the Community Centre when a number of different ride options will be discussed. Expect around 40 to 50 miles with a cafe stop. Please put a comment if you intend to ride.

Saturday 10th October-Stanley Ferry-45 miles
A damp and windy morning did not deter 5 riders meeting at the community centre. On the way out we picked up a further 3 riders, Angela on Leeds Rd and Ian/Ali at the Sharma. The usual route through Batley and a climb up to Shaw Cross, onwards through Woodkirk, Tingley and into Middleton Park. Through Belle Isle and down to the River Aire which we followed to Woodlesford. Oulton and Methley next, a very strong headwind made for challenging conditions to Stanley and The Hungry Horse on Ferry Lane. Ken left us at this point, to return to Roberttown (an important local derby football match was calling). Food and drinks consumed the remaining riders headed out to face the elements. A strong westerly wind made the going tough but we're not made of sugar! Back to the Outwood junction and Tingley where Ian/Ali left the group. The usual route to Dewsbury before picking up the Spen Valley Greenway with riders departing at various points to make their way home. Riding today where Caroline, Karen, Angela, Neil, Ken, Ian, Ali and myself Virginia.

Tuesday Gravel Ride Report 6th October
Our first Tuesday off-road ride of the year. The morning began with some light drizzle but it didn’t deter the three cyclists and after a short discussion the longer ride was agreed. So leaving Roberttown Community Centre at 9:30am we ventured down the Spen Valley Greenway and through Dewsbury to Leggers for our first off road section. This took us along the Calder and Hebble Navigation to the Navigation Inn. We made our way to Green Lane and then on to The Hepworth in Wakefield where we were able to pickup the Trans Pennine Trail.

So far so good with the navigation. While cycling along the paths following the River Calder a turn was missed which should have taken us onto the other side of the River. Nevertheless we ventured on, some of the paths being quite narrow as we explored the countryside. We found ourselves in Newland Country Park where the track widened out and undulated. A look on Google maps to check on our progress and Garmin suggested routes to put us back on track. Not wishing to backtrack we ventured on and emerged on tarmac at Altofts. We soon were able to pick up the route again as we turned off Church Road and went down to the Aire and Calder Navigation. Now we were back on known towpaths and were soon in the centre of Castleford for our cafe stop at The Glass Blower (Wetherspoons).

Excellent service as always at Wetherspoons in Castleford. We all had the All-Day-Brunch and hot drinks. Excellent value and filled the hole in our stomachs. And a second hot drink followed.

We were in exploring mode as we left the warm Glass Blower. Over the weir of the River Aire and along the Barnsdale Road and then onto the narrow tracks which followed the River Aire to Allerton Bywater. A short distance on the Leeds Road before making our way back to the River Aire and St Aidens Nature Reserve. Leaving the River Aire at Rothwell Country Park we made our way through Rothwell using the Rothwell Greenway. This took us through to Robin Hood and then we made our back on the familiar route past Country Basket to Dewsbury and the Spen Valley Greenway.

A thoroughly enjoyable day out. Very little on busy roads and new trails for most of us although not necessarily intensional. Great fun exploring the countryside and not having to worry about passing vehicles. Caroline was on her hybrid bike with front suspension and managed the tricky terrain with ease. Virginia was on her e-bike but didn’t use her battery power very much. I was on my road bike with gravel wheels and tyres so didn’t have to work as hard as the other two as it was much lighter.

Lookout for off road cycling next Tuesday. It’s great fun. We certainly enjoyed today. Thank you Caroline and Virginia for your company and help with the navigation
