Tuesday Evening Ride Report 25th August
Eleven cyclists at Roberttown Community Centre this evening; Karen, Virginia, Jackie, June, Angela, Neil, Steve, David H, David B, John S and myself (Ken). Bright sunshine but a strong easterly breeze so after a quick consultation a flat route was suggested. Unfortunately they let me decide on the actual route so a flat route was very unlikely.
The route began with good intentions, Ha’Penny Bridge and onto the Calder Valley Greenway, over the viaduct, along the Huddersfield Broad Canal towpath and leaving by ICI to continue along Leeds Road. At Bradley Mills Road we encountered our first climb up to Moldgreen.
A second climb soon became apparent with Almondbury Bank followed by Langley Road up to Lowerhouses. At F***y Moor Lane we had our traditional photo stop with Castle Hill in the background.
On through Newsome and a fast downhill to Berry Brow with our final climb up to Meltham Road. A return through Lockwood and St Andrews Road brought us back to Leeds Road and onto the Towpath and Calder Valley Greenway again. The route still had a few more little climbs, Battyeford, Old Bank and our return to Roberttown.
About twenty miles in distance and 1500feet of climbing, not bad for a flat route. The easterly wind helped us up the hills leading to the foothills of Castle Hill and the meandering route back gave us shelter from the breeze. Very strong cycling by all.
