Saturday saw us return to Staney Brig for the first time in a couple of months for this Strathclyde Cup last 16 tie v Plains.

A horrendous start to the game saw us one down in the first minute after a corner swung in from the right was nodded in unopposed as the Milngavie backline failed to pick up the spare man. The game then became a bit of a scrappy affair with both teams failing to impose themselves fully although Plains were at least managing to get onto the majority of the loose balls. 10 mins before HT saw us fall further behind when yet again failure to clear our lines allowed the visitors an opportunity to go further ahead which they took. Quick change at HT saw a couple of changes for Milngavie which certainly improved things and saw us push further up the pitch in an attempt to get back into the game, a couple of half chances for the Wandies came and went before Plains struck again after a defensive mix up allowed the Plains forward to lob the ball over Elliot and into the empty net. A long way back now although Milngavie never gave up and managed to find the net with ten still to play after a great one two between Bodman and Bonar saw Bonar break into the box round the centre half and GK before slotting into the empty net. . The game fizzled out after that with neither team creating much in the way of clear cut chances and the game came to a disappointing conclusion and a cup exit for Milngavie . A bit of a bad tempered affair yet again between two teams who clearly are not currently on the best of terms atm … FT at Staney Brig

Back to cup action today with a 4th round clash in the Alona WOS cup v Caledonian League leaders Drumchapel Amateurs

Despite sticking to our game plan and limiting the home team to one or two half chances we found ourselves 2 down at the break after a couple of contentious refereeing decisions that both went against us .. difficult to comprehend as these things will always even themselves up …. Don’t they !!

2nd half saw us more in the front foot and seeing more of ball and for 15 -20 min spell we looked the more likely to score, the next goal was always going to prove crucial and unfortunately it was the hosts who struck again with a decent header into the corner of the Milngavie net from a whipped cross out on the right. Despite being 3 -0 down the lads kept at it and probably should and could have scored on more than one occasions after rattling the bar twice in the last 5 mins. Great attitude and discipline from everyone who played their part today which augurs well for the rest of the season

With Staney Brig out of action due to last week’s heavy rain Saturday saw us taking the game over to Lennoxtown High Park 5G for this 3rd Round West of Scotland Clash with GGPFL team Campsie AFC.

A horrible start to the game saw us go 1-0 down within 1minute of kick off after a defensive mix up allowed the Campsie No.7 in on goal to slot the ball away from Elliot. After a shaky 15 mins the coaching team identified that our formation today wasn’t going to work and switched back to a more comfortable 4 at the back. The change allowed Milngavie to be more solid and comfortable in possession and eventually grow into the game creating one or two half chances before the break, however none were taken and we went into the break one down.

The second half was becoming a battle in the middle of the park with both teams lacking quality in the final third to finish off any good build up play. It was beginning to look like another one of those days after The Wandies squandered a couple of great chances to square the game. However with 23 mins gone of the second half the ball broke to Dyl Cameron from a Milngavie corner who then lashed the ball on the full into the Campsie net leaving the keeper rooted to the spot … 1-1 with just over 20 mins left to get the job done. Barely 5 mins later Milngavie struck again after some great lead up play from Bonar who’s lofted thro ball found Louis Smith free allowing the Milngavie man time and space to volley into the Campsie net … 2–1 Milngavie going into the last 15 mins of a highly competitive cup tie. Despite fashioning another couple of chances it took until almost the last kick of the ball before Milngavie finally put the tie to bed. A clearance from Campsie deep into the Wandies half was met on the full by Greig on our own 18 yard line and after one bounce the ball sailed over the Campsie keeper and into the net … a definite 70yarder and quite a finish to seal the game. Tomorrow we face Campsie FC from the Greater Glasgow League in the 3rd Round of the West of Scotland Cup. Our recent cup form has been good, so we are hoping this continues tomorrow! The game has been switched to High Park 3G due to the poor weather to ensure the game goes ahead, and is a later than normal kick off at 1pm - get along and support the team if you're at a loose end!

No match report from last Saturday as our usual match reporter was unavailable....

We lost 4-1 to a strong Glennifer team which brought our recent good run to an end.

This Saturday we are back in cup action again as we take on Campsie FC in the West of Scotland Cup.

After a great win in the league away to EK last week we travel down to Beith tomorrow morning for an early kick off against high flying Glennifer Thistle.

The lads are on a great run at the moment but a very tough game awaits us.

Match report from Saturday:

The game started in frenetic fashion with the home team taking the lead within the first minute with what looked like an obvious offside goal, however the ref deemed otherwise. Despite the early setback Milngavie struck back immediately after great work by Scotty Falconer squaring for The Bull to tuck away low into the Colts net. Energised by the quick response Milngavie struck again two minutes later after great pressing from Dylan Cameron with the ball breaking to Captain Scott Simpson who lashed an unstoppable shot in off the post … 2-1 and great reaction for the lads. Milngavie were well on the front foot by now and stretched their lead on the 29 minute mark after great work again by Falconer on the left and cutting back for Bull to meet the cross & place the ball beyond the diving EK keeper. The Wandies had a couple of opportunities to stretch their lead before finally doing so after 37 minutes after Scotty Simpson latched on to a loose ball & again lashed his left foot shot high into the net …. HT 4-1 to Milngavie and no more than we deserved.

A more evenly contested second half ensued after Milngavie were forced into a number of changes which resulted in us resorting back into a 442 formation taking a little time to adjust in both personnel & shape. However it was Milngavie who struck again midway through the 2nd half after great work from Bull forcing the ball loose which dropped for Dylan Cameron to bundle the ball over the line. Colts weren’t finished however & struck their second after a long ball was misjudged by the Wandies defence allowing the EK striker to toe poke the ball under the advancing Elliot. Milngavie managed to introduce a few younger players into the fray in the final 15-20 minutes with Gallagher,Feehan & Ul Haq getting some valuable game time. Indeed almost on the full time mark after a great thro ball to Feehan from Bull, releasing the youngster into the EK box for Gallagher to stroke into the net. Great to see the young lads combining & finishing off a terrific team performance with a goal … FT EK Colts 2 Milngavie W 6 … great team performance and a well earned CL & deserved 3pts … onto next week 💪🏻

Yesterday saw a strong Wandies squad head across the city to take on East Kilbride colts in round 1 of the Strathclyde Cup.

Following our recent league draw against the Colts a tough cup tie lay ahead for Milngavie. A strong start to the game saw us take control of the ball and force the opposition onto the back foot however the final ball in those early exchanges didn’t quite fall for us and the game stayed at 0-0 until a sweeping move through the EK backline saw us strike first on 22mins thro Daniel Bonar from an ODonnell assist. Hardly three mins had gone by when Bonar struck again sliding the ball past the EK keeper to make it 2-0, again ODOnnell providing the assist.
Milngavie were now well on top and in almost complete control of the ball before another well constructed move saw us move further ahead with ODonnell this time getting on the scoresheet to make it 3-0. HT and probably Milngavie’s best 45 mins of the season so far.

After HT our control of the ball continued and barely 5 mins into the 2nd half a fantastic floated free kick from Scott Simpson was crashed into the Colts net via a rare Jack King header… 4-0 Wandies and in cruise control, indeed the game should’ve been wrapped up moments later, however Bonar missed the opportunity to grab a Hat trick when it seemed easier to score … sensing an opportunity to punish the miss EK soon grabbed a quick fire double to put a
Some pressure on the away team .. 4-2 Wandies with still 25 mins to go ! The game was now being played in the Milngavie half as EK looked to press on and grab a 3rd, however It was Milngavie who struck again with a 5th thro Kinnon after some great work from Dylan Cameron on the left cutting back from the byeline for Bull to roll into the net … 5-2 Milngavie and surely into the next round now. EK had other ideas and added a third to keep Milngavie honest right to the final whistle. Despite opportunities for both teams in the last 10 mins the game closed out 5-3 in the away teams favour

After a great win in The West last week against strong Ayrshire opposition we travel to EK tomorrow to take on EK Colts in the Strathclyde Cup.

A very tough game awaits after a 2-2 draw in the week a couple of weeks back. All support would be greatly appreciated!

EK settled quickly & early exchanges kept Milngavie pinned back in their own half forcing Elliot into a couple of great saves to keep the Wandies level. However it was Milngavie who had EK scrambling as a Bonar effort from the edge of the box cannoned off the post however no one in Blue could get onto the rebound allowing EK to scramble the ball clear.

Midway through the 1st half a cross was misjudged by Milngavie allowing the EK no. 9 an empty net to nod into at far post… 1-0 EK.

As the half progressed Milngavie were now able to get on the ball more consistently & managed to fashion 2 or 3 half chances before a clumsy tackle on Drain from the EK left back gave Bonar an opportunity from the dead ball. His curling effort from the free kick had the keeper beaten but didn’t dip quickly enough & clattered off the bar. It felt like another one of those days again. But not to be denied, Milngavie struck level just before HT as Bonar latched onto a superb thro ball from Smith, holding off the retreating EK defenders before slotting the ball under the Colts keeper.

No changes at HT - the game now swinging from end to end & as he has done often this season Elliot kept us in the game with numerous 1 on 1 saves frustrating the EK 9 in particular. Milngavie fashioned 1 or 2 opportunities of their own and with around 20 minutes to go Balde who had replaced Falconer on the Left cut across the box eventually releasing to Bonar who was then floored as he attempted a thro ball on the edge of the D. The resultant free kick was buried into the back of the Colts net by Greig …

With mins to go Milngavie almost extended their lead as a Bonar shot clattered off the post with Balde unable to get on the rebound … it was to prove a costly miss as right on 90 mins EK broke into the Wandies box & a failed attempt at a clearance saw a tangle legs with the EK player hitting the deck dramatically & the Ref pointing to the spot, it appeared to be an extremely soft award.
Elliot correctly dived to his right but couldn’t keep the shot out.
