CELTMAN! Extreme Scottish Triathlon Celtman is something I never thought I’d be able to do. After my DNF at Cape Wrath Ultra® last year I felt I had unfinished business in Torridon but I’m not sure of my life choices with 3.4km sea swim, 200 bike and 40km mountain run.

Headed up on Thursday with crew driver Mary Donaldson for registration, briefing and planning. Crew support runner Graham Kelly join us on Friday in preparation for a fun packed Saturday.

Shieldaig set up at 0330hrs then onto the bus to the start. In the water and ready to start for 0500. It was 10 degrees! Everyone knows I hate swimming so this was going to be a challenge. I knew I just needed to get on with it. The cold water kept the jellyfish away but the bad weather made it really choppy. Got dragged out by Mary at T1 and both stripped and redressed me then sent me off on the bike.

Weather was brutal! Rain, headwinds, occasional tail winds. Crew jumped me with the van for our stops and kept me going. 160km in and was looking on track for the high route but the head wind funnel for the last 40km put an end to that. No blue tshirt for me.

Into bike transition and it was the field at Kinlochewe used by Cape Wrath where I DNF’d. It was so muddy the vehicles were all getting stuck. Quick change and off I went. Now in my happy place with mud and bogs. Beardy joined me at T2A as support runner for the low mountain route. Weather continued to be awful and turns out no-one did the high route as too dangerous. Finished in 15hrs 15mins.

Prizegiving and t-shirt giving today and turns out it was the worse conditions they’ve had. Now pretty pleased with myself that I did it and my time was good. Now home and a full van full of muddy and wet kit….

Milngavie Trail race done for 2026! Fantastic day and the rain held off. With over 240 runners it was fun packed action with mud, chat, cake, prizes and much more. The 20th Glasgow run the event and all money raised is going towards a new roof for the scout hall. Their cakes, organising and marshalling is a fine art. Some of my EpicTrails crew joined on the marshal points, as sweeper and on first aid. Big shout out to the local community too with for medals, on timing, on massage and spot prizes from

Race Director duties…time to mark the route. Tomorrow is the 10th Milngavie Trail race and my favourite (I have to say that don’t I). The route has been marked, the mud is ideal squelch, hall set up, notes written, beer ready plus some amazing prizes. See everyone tomorrow….

Fantastic run with the crew tonight and stumbled across out on a training exercise (we hope). We managed to triple our numbers on this section. Luckily none of us needed their assistance. Big thank you to everyone in who gives up their time to help others.

Motivation Monday. Tonight it’s all about pacing and not overcooking it in the heat. It’s toasty and we aren’t used to it yet. With 6 x 600m followed by 4 x200m the aim is to maintain pace. The heat can make the legs feel heavy so rehydration is important and listening to your body. It’s working harder in the heat so if the pace is slightly slower it’s ok.

What a morning. Started running at 7am and back home for second breakfast by 9.45am. Humid lower down but as we summited Dumgoyne a lovely breeze started and continued until we dropped back down. Lots of summits, little lambs, bogs, views and not another person about.

When the bike shop I’ve been hiring bikes from since I was a very small person turns 80 and releases a limited edition gin courtesy of distillery it would be rude not to. Lovely to see all the celebrations for , the bikes through the ages and I even met the penny farthing on my cycle this morning. Bet I could go faster if I had a big wheel that size.
