5 Reasons to join the gym In December
1 ) Its quieter in December
It’s common knowledge and widely accepted that gyms are a lot quieter in December than they are in January. This makes it much easier to get acclimatised and comfortable in your new surroundings. For most people a new gym environment can be intimidating, by starting in December it allows you a month to familiarise yourself with the gyms surroundings, getting comfortable with the equipment and understanding all aspects of the facility before the New Year begins.
2) Its Cheaper
Whilst the odd gym do not follow this rule, the vast majority of gyms are cheaper to join in December than January. Logically it makes sense in January as nearly 50% of the population have a New Year’s resolution and weight loss is the number one chosen, gyms are entering their peak seasons of trade. In December you can usually get yourself a good deal and really doesn’t pay off to delay.
3) It Can Help With Hangovers
Unfortunately, the sweat-it-out theory is a myth, but that doesn't mean breaking a sweat is a bad idea.
"The qualities that make exercise an effective anti-depressant can help you feel better," according to Katarina Borer, Ph.D., professor at the University of Michigan's School of Kinesiology.
Exercise releases a surge of neurochemicals and hormones—like endorphins, norepinepherine, and even adrenaline—that boost your energy, mood, motivation, and pleasure. Plus, burning off a few extra calories may diminish some of your guilt for overindulging the night before.
4) Its a Break From It All
Whilst Christmas is a festive and celebratory time of year it can bring it extra pressures that are generally not experienced at other times during the year. From deciding what to buy, the financial outlay, deciding on the food over Christmas period, dealing with visiting out of town family, the in-laws, etc. Christmas can be a chaotic and stressful period. The gym can be a comforting escape from it all, to escape, switch off, unwind, and get out some aggression.
5) It Helps Prevent The Christmas Bulge
Experts estimate average weight gain over the seasonal period to be anywhere from one to four kilograms. We generally all indulge over the festive period, it’s very easy to gain weight due to the alcohol, social events, etc.
There are many tips and tactics to help avoid the Christmas bulge, such as being smart with alcohol choices etc, but as a general easy rule being active allows you to burn off those excess calories consumed.
