Coulby Newham FC 1 - 3 South Bank United FC
Second game of the season and the first one at home saw us taking on familiar opponents in South Bank United.
The game started well for us as we controlled possession with some dangerous attacks, playing mainly in the south bank half but being careful not to over commit as we knew South Bank would be dangerous on the break. Our initial control paid off within 10 minutes when Danny Boyle found Chrissy Willard on the right who struck a bobbling ball cleanly with power past the keeper and into the corner of the net.
The game went back and forth with both teams having their share of attacks with a combination of the Coulby back four and Danny Sowerby in goal keeping the score at 1-0. Until around the 30 minute mark, we found ourselves with a free kick on the right hand side of the pitch. Unfortunately, the ball in the box was captured by the South Bank keeper who quickly launched the away side on a counter attack down their right hand side, the winger slid the ball across the box onto the strikers foot who placed it past Danny in goal.
The well contested half carried on for 15 minutes until the ref brought it to a close, half time 1-1.
Both teams started the second half pretty much how the first had ended, well contested and not many clear cut chances being created for either side. On the 65th minute, we found ourselves behind when a corner turned into a game of pinball in the box, with the ball finally nestling in the coulby net.
We pushed for an equaliser in the last 20 minutes but the South Bank defence held strong. With 10 minutes to go, a slip at the back allowed the South Bank attacker to run in 1v1 on Dannys goal, he made it 1-3 and put the game to bed.
Our first defeat in the league since April 2025, weβll look to get back to winning ways next week home to Thornaby Nash.
