Sunday at Scholes

On a cloudy Sunday morning at Scholes, Mexborough arrived eager for a little revenge after the nightmare of the 2025 fixture, where the team was skittled for just 36. With that memory still lingering, captain Nick "One Claw" Cashmore lost the toss and Mexborough were asked to bat first.

Opening the innings, Karl "Angle Eyes" Buxton and Linney walked out with confidence. However, on a dry wicket offering plenty for the bowlers, Scholes & Harley struck first. Karl fell for 5 (13), caught attempting to work the ball away.

In came the young Boy Wonder, Krish Singh, who immediately looked comfortable alongside Linney as the pair battled through some tricky early conditions. Linney's resistance ended on 12 (23) when a thick edge found its way to a fielder.

With the score moving along steadily, Daz "Knows Everything" Snow joined Krish at the crease. At 43-2, the ghosts of 2025 were beginning to fade. Krish continued to keep the scoreboard moving before eventually falling for a well-made 23.

Young Snapper, Caiden "Wants a Claw" Cashmore, entertained briefly with a superb boundary and a quick single before being bowled attempting a big swing, departing for 5 (9).

At 69-4, Daz was holding the innings together. Up stepped Nick "One Claw" Cashmore. Unfortunately, nobody saw much of him as Mexborough quickly became 69-5.

Jacob "Not Better" Rouane joined Snow and helped steady the innings for several overs before Jordan "Better" Rouane arrived. Just as the partnership was building, Daz was caught off a rare bouncer after a trademark push shot, leaving Mexborough 86-7.

Matt "One Voice" Whittaker tried to accelerate but couldn't continue his recent form, falling for 5 (6) with the score on 99-8.

Ash "Still In My Life" Firth then joined Jordan Rouane, and together they transformed the innings. Their excellent 48-run partnership dragged Mexborough from trouble to a competitive position at 149-9.

With the tail adding a few valuable runs, Mexborough were eventually bowled out for 154.

After tea, the feeling around the ground was that Mexborough might be 30 or 40 runs short.

Oh, how wrong they were.

Jordan "Better" Rouane and Karl "Angle Eyes" Buxton opened the bowling, while Linney made a surprise appearance behind the stumps.

Jordan's first over suggested the chase might be straightforward for Scholes, with a bye helping the over cost nine runs. However, Mexborough quickly regrouped and turned the game on its head.

Karl produced a devastating spell, taking 2 wickets for just 2 runs in six deliveries. Scholes suddenly found themselves on the back foot. Jordan followed up with a superb over of his own, claiming a wicket while conceding just a single run.

Scholes slumped to 11-3.

Brown and Fielding attempted to rebuild for the home side, showing plenty of resistance. The breakthrough eventually came from Jacob "Not Better" Rouane, whose lovely inswinger uprooted Brown's middle stump.

The bowling figures told the story:

Karl "Angle Eyes" Buxton โ€“ 8 overs, 15 runs, 2 wickets
Jordan "Better" Rouane โ€“ 6 overs, 13 runs, 1 wicket
Jacob "Not Better" Rouane โ€“ 5 overs, 14 runs, 1 wicket

Then came the Boy Wonder once again.

Krish Singh bowled with genuine pace and control, troubling every batter he faced. His spell of 4 overs, 6 runs, and 2 wickets effectively ended any hopes of a Scholes recovery.

Up stepped pie-maker Nicolas "One Claw" Cashmore. With Krish doing the hard work from one end, the Scholes batters struggled to adjust to the change of pace. Cashmore cleaned up the lower order and finished with four wickets.

The pick of the dismissals came courtesy of a world-class catch from Matthew "Doesn't Bat or Bowl on This Sunday, Thanks for the Fielding" Russell, who somehow plucked the ball from four yards away in spectacular fashion.

With Cashmore taking wickets and Krish continuing to impress, the result became inevitable. Fittingly, the Boy Wonder claimed the final wicket.

Scholes & Harley were all out for 72.

What initially looked like a difficult wicket turned into a dominant all-round performance from Mexborough.

Special mentions go to:

Ash Firth and Jordan Rouane for rescuing the innings with the bat.
Nick "One Claw" Cashmore for his four wickets.
Karl "Angle Eyes" Buxton for pinning back the openers.
Krish Singh for a brilliant spell of fast bowling.
Linney for his athletic work behind the stumps.
Matthew Russell for a catch that will be talked about for weeks.

A complete team performance and an excellent win for Mexborough

๐Ÿ2nd XI Match Report @ Home vs Higham. ๐Ÿ

The day started with the Mexborough skipper winning the toss and electing to have a bowl and things started well enough with both openers skipper Matt Whitaker and Jacob Rouane claiming a wicket apiece leaving the opposition 36/2. After a change of bowler at each end we started to get on top with Luqmaan claiming a wicket and on debut for the 2nd XI Ash Firth showing a touch of class claiming 3 wickets in an over and finishing with 4 in total, Whilst all this was going on Mitch Boyle with a direct hit giving us another wicket. We were fully on top and could see ourselves chasing a score below 100 but in came there skipper and taking a liking to a couple of our bowlers and put on a quick fire 50. From 86/8 by the time the skipper was bowled by his counterpart who brought himself back on they were 144/9 and they finished there innings on that score with Matt Whitaker claiming 2 more wickets on his 1st over back. 144 AO

Notable Figures
M. Whitaker 5.4 overs 2/22
A. Firth 6 overs 4/33

After a fabulous tea by Emma that was enjoyed by all the plan was clear 145 needed 240 ball to get there.

With confidence high and a feeling we could chase down the total that laid in front of us Steve Addy and Tom Goundry walked out with a plan in place tick the score board over and see off the opening bowlers, This didnt go to plan with both batsmen back in the shed with only 11 on the board, When the next wicket fell the skipper came walking out confidence and form on the lower side of the scale but with a point to prove not only to himself but to all round him. Small partnerships were formed but wickets fell around him and at 86/8 it felt like we had thrown away a good chance at victory but Jacob Rouane dug in and stuck around and put on a very much needed 44 with the skipper before he fell with the score on 130/9. 15 needed. Then in the 37th over with only 5 needed the brain fog kicked in for the skipper who saw his name in lights 1 big hit wins the game a tired lazy shot and he was gone for 62. 139 AO.

Notable Figures
M. Whitaker 62 off 74
J. Rouane JR 19 off 41
J. Hussain 19 off 36

It felt like a game that swung in favour of both teams multiple times but in the end a narrow 5 run defeat but we can take points from this game into next week and even in defeat we can move forward with a bit of confidence showing we can dig in and grind out a score in the toughest of times.

The umpires gave MOTM to Skipper Matt Whitaker for contributions with both Bat and Ball. Special mentions for A. Firth for 4 wickets and J. Rouane for his contribution with the bat

๐ŸMexborough Under 9s Festival write up๐Ÿ

A cool cloudy day greeted the Under 9s for the first of a double header weekend at the home of cricket! Elsecar Blue were first up for Mexborough, the opposition choosing to bat first. A couple of early wickets gave the early advantage to the hosts but some fine batting in the middle and end of the innings put a good total on the board. Mexborough made a steady start in reply and despite keeping wickets intact were kept in check by some fine bowling and fielding including a maiden in the final over. Elsecar Blue taking the win. A move over to pitch three saw us take on Elsecar Gold, Mexborough opting to bat first. Solid batting throughout put a good total on the board. Some tight bowling kept Elsecar under pressure early on and despite some big hits at the end, Mexborough took the victory. Our final opponents were Rockingham back on pitch one. Mexborough, batting first, made steady progress and were set for a good total before a fine comeback by the bowlers in the closing overs. Still a decent total which was dependable, especially after an early wicket. Rockingham though stuck to their task pulling away late on to take the win. A good day all in, thanks to everyone who came along to support the club and hopefully the sun makes an appearance this Saturday for our next Mexborough tournament.

Would like to thank Wath-Upon-Dearne Tesco for the support for Saturday

Mexborough Cricket Club vs Houghton Main Cricket Club

Looking for a third win in a row the lads turned up to a cloudly backdrop at the Beecrofts Estates Cricket Ground, skipper Lee Jeffries won the toss and decided to make best use of the conditions and invited Houghton Main to bat first.

Jonathan Guest and Matt Russell started nicely with the new ball finding a good deal of lateral movement early on . The lads were quickly on top and reduced the opposition to 33/4.

It was nice to see Ethan Hughes fit to bowl again after a side injury had prevented this for 9 weeks , he bowled sharply but still searching for rhythm.

Phil Taylor provided the highlight in the field with a stunning one handed grab at slip off Mr Linneys off spin.

Gul Safi (46) and Joseph Hiles (36) provide good resistance and dragged Houghton Main over 100 , they were bowled out in 29 overs finishing on 115.

Jonny Bradley finishing with the best figures of 3/10.

Emma provided an excellent tea and everyone enjoyed the refreshments.

Lee and Ethan opened the innings, unfortunately Lee was quickly back in the hutch after an excellent inswinger from Isaac Ling disturbed his bails.

Following a heavy downpour Ethan provided a quick 20 including a couple of excellent whips through midwicket, he was subsequently caught well by Jospeh Hiles off a delivery the bounced excessively on a slightly up and down deck.

A few loose shots followed as wickets fell , Daz Snow the exception as he was unlucky to receive a ball that pitched on middle and removed his off bail , top delivery from Hiles.

It was left to the experienced Gaz Hughes to shepherd the tail to victory , making a stubborn 31 not out as Mexborough reached 116/9 from 36 overs.

Special Mention to a very nervous Mitch Boyle for surviving to allow the victory to be confirmed and the 12 points claimed.

Gaz Hughes was selected as MOM for anchoring the innings.

๐ŸSunday report ๐Ÿ

Hatfield were the visitor's today where the home skipper won the toss and elected to field first ,where he let loose his father son duo opening bowlers Jo and Jacob have a go to which they only got wicket between them in their spell, it wasn't until the 3rd option of bowling came Matt R and bullied kids to take a 5fer in his bowling spell 26/5 from 5overs well done ,also the skipper claimed a wicket as so did rich m claiming 2 for himself and Mitch claiming 1, time for teas as per usual they were spot on ,now our time to bat brad and linney opened up but it wasn't long before linney was sat back in the pavilion ๐Ÿคฆso Krish (49) went to bat and put on show with brad getting us to 107/2 as Brad got out (57) but unfortunately the wickets started falling often with only resistance coming from rich with 25 and 29 from Jo but mom went to Krish well done pal

๐ŸMatch Report ๐Ÿ
2nd XI Away vs Fishlake

On an overcast day both skippers walked out to the middle for the toss and both knew what we wanted to do and it was the same thing and unfortunately the Fishlake captain got to make the call and to the surprise of nobody they decided to have a bowl. The Cashmore brothers opened up for Mex and both fell for near identical shots leaving us 12/2. From there wickets fell often with not many batters getting to grips with the wicket and the bowling attack of the opposition. We stumbled our way to what felt at the time a lack lustre 83 AO with only two players reaching double figures. Agam (21) and Tom (25).

Then came the part most people enjoy and the reason people fight to play here, Teas. They were as always top notch and enjoyed by everyone.

We walked out to try and defend our modest total and skipper Matt Whitaker started strong taking his first and only wicket in his 1st over, ably backed by young Luqmaan at the other end who finished 4 overs 2/22. With Fishlake 32/3 we thought we were right in the game and that our 83 wasn't that far below par on what was clearly showing itself as a bowlers wicket. We kept our voices loud and spirits high. A change of bowlers came and along with it a few more wickets for the slower bowling of Ras 3.4 over 2/15 and Nick Cashmore 3 overs 1/24. Fishlake finished 86/6.

A special shout out for the Fishlake boys who joined us for a minutes silence before the start of the game for Mackenzie Swift who tragically lost his life in the River Don at just 11. R.I.P.

With no umpires we put the question to the squad for MOTM and people quickly threw out names but the most consistently heard was Agam for his effort with the bat.
