Sunday at Scholes
On a cloudy Sunday morning at Scholes, Mexborough arrived eager for a little revenge after the nightmare of the 2025 fixture, where the team was skittled for just 36. With that memory still lingering, captain Nick "One Claw" Cashmore lost the toss and Mexborough were asked to bat first.
Opening the innings, Karl "Angle Eyes" Buxton and Linney walked out with confidence. However, on a dry wicket offering plenty for the bowlers, Scholes & Harley struck first. Karl fell for 5 (13), caught attempting to work the ball away.
In came the young Boy Wonder, Krish Singh, who immediately looked comfortable alongside Linney as the pair battled through some tricky early conditions. Linney's resistance ended on 12 (23) when a thick edge found its way to a fielder.
With the score moving along steadily, Daz "Knows Everything" Snow joined Krish at the crease. At 43-2, the ghosts of 2025 were beginning to fade. Krish continued to keep the scoreboard moving before eventually falling for a well-made 23.
Young Snapper, Caiden "Wants a Claw" Cashmore, entertained briefly with a superb boundary and a quick single before being bowled attempting a big swing, departing for 5 (9).
At 69-4, Daz was holding the innings together. Up stepped Nick "One Claw" Cashmore. Unfortunately, nobody saw much of him as Mexborough quickly became 69-5.
Jacob "Not Better" Rouane joined Snow and helped steady the innings for several overs before Jordan "Better" Rouane arrived. Just as the partnership was building, Daz was caught off a rare bouncer after a trademark push shot, leaving Mexborough 86-7.
Matt "One Voice" Whittaker tried to accelerate but couldn't continue his recent form, falling for 5 (6) with the score on 99-8.
Ash "Still In My Life" Firth then joined Jordan Rouane, and together they transformed the innings. Their excellent 48-run partnership dragged Mexborough from trouble to a competitive position at 149-9.
With the tail adding a few valuable runs, Mexborough were eventually bowled out for 154.
After tea, the feeling around the ground was that Mexborough might be 30 or 40 runs short.
Oh, how wrong they were.
Jordan "Better" Rouane and Karl "Angle Eyes" Buxton opened the bowling, while Linney made a surprise appearance behind the stumps.
Jordan's first over suggested the chase might be straightforward for Scholes, with a bye helping the over cost nine runs. However, Mexborough quickly regrouped and turned the game on its head.
Karl produced a devastating spell, taking 2 wickets for just 2 runs in six deliveries. Scholes suddenly found themselves on the back foot. Jordan followed up with a superb over of his own, claiming a wicket while conceding just a single run.
Scholes slumped to 11-3.
Brown and Fielding attempted to rebuild for the home side, showing plenty of resistance. The breakthrough eventually came from Jacob "Not Better" Rouane, whose lovely inswinger uprooted Brown's middle stump.
The bowling figures told the story:
Karl "Angle Eyes" Buxton โ 8 overs, 15 runs, 2 wickets
Jordan "Better" Rouane โ 6 overs, 13 runs, 1 wicket
Jacob "Not Better" Rouane โ 5 overs, 14 runs, 1 wicket
Then came the Boy Wonder once again.
Krish Singh bowled with genuine pace and control, troubling every batter he faced. His spell of 4 overs, 6 runs, and 2 wickets effectively ended any hopes of a Scholes recovery.
Up stepped pie-maker Nicolas "One Claw" Cashmore. With Krish doing the hard work from one end, the Scholes batters struggled to adjust to the change of pace. Cashmore cleaned up the lower order and finished with four wickets.
The pick of the dismissals came courtesy of a world-class catch from Matthew "Doesn't Bat or Bowl on This Sunday, Thanks for the Fielding" Russell, who somehow plucked the ball from four yards away in spectacular fashion.
With Cashmore taking wickets and Krish continuing to impress, the result became inevitable. Fittingly, the Boy Wonder claimed the final wicket.
Scholes & Harley were all out for 72.
What initially looked like a difficult wicket turned into a dominant all-round performance from Mexborough.
Special mentions go to:
Ash Firth and Jordan Rouane for rescuing the innings with the bat.
Nick "One Claw" Cashmore for his four wickets.
Karl "Angle Eyes" Buxton for pinning back the openers.
Krish Singh for a brilliant spell of fast bowling.
Linney for his athletic work behind the stumps.
Matthew Russell for a catch that will be talked about for weeks.
A complete team performance and an excellent win for Mexborough
