Melksham Tyremen Rugby League Update

Congratulations to everyone associated with the club no matter how big or small your contribution. We achieved our aim of reestablishing Rugby League in the area and playing two friendly fixtures.

Next season the Tyremen intend on joining a league, the most natural fit currently would be the Midlands Rugby League Merit/League 1. The club also plan to play some youth/junior fixtures/festivals.

In order to achieve the above we will need to grow the offield team. We would like to recruit volunteers in the following positions to help meet our objectives:

- Team manager; to help with player communication, registrations, administration and general organisation

- Fixtures secretary; organise and confirm fixtures

- Sponsorship and stash lead; find sponsors for matches, shirts, equipment etc and organisation stash for the boys

- Social media and media; somebody to help coordinate social media and raise our profile in the area (make these posts a lot more engaging than they currently are with some professional graphics 😉)

- Coaches for open age section (including women's lead)

- youth section lead; we have at least one youth coach (u7s) confirmed but need somebody to oversee the section as it grows

- youth section coaches and assistant coaches; coaches who are will either help the u7s or lead on growing additional age groups

Great opportunity for Rugby players in the West and South West, opportunity for the best talent from the Southern Regional Carnival to play for Combined Southern Regions against Wales Dragonhearts and Australia/New Zealand Exiles. Check it out 🏉👇🇳🇿🇦🇺

WEST OF ENGLAND/SOUTH WEST REQUEST PLAYERS TO EXPRESS AN INTEREST AHEAD OF SOUTHERN REGIONAL CARNIVAL

In order to qualify to represent the West/South West region, players must qualify to represent England as this is the first rung on the ladders as part of the England Lions RL pathway. Players should be based in the West or South West and/or play for clubs from these areas and able to fully commit to the programme.

Rugby League (not registered professionals) and union players will be considered, who are of an appropriate standard.

This year the best players from the Southern Carnival will be selected to play for Combined Southern Regions to take on Australia 🇦🇺/New Zealand 🇳🇿 Exiles and Wales Rugby League - Rygbi Cynghrair Cymru Dragonhearts in October on the dates below.

Ray French was a big supporter of growing the footprint 👣 of Rugby League outside of the northern heartlands and was present when Rugby League was first played in the area by a Bath club in the mid 1980s. RIP Ray, thank you for your support in growing the sport 🏉

Some sad news to bring you.
Rugby league great Ray French, who commentated on the sport for the BBC over four decades, has died at the age of 85.
Our thoughts, from everybody at BBC Sport, are with all his family and friends.

It is goodnight from Melksham Rugby Club...

Swindon St George win the inaugural battle of Wiltshire Rugby League event.

Melksham Tyremen played their best Rugby League the second part of the first half after a slow start and also started strong the first part of the second half and were unlucky not to post more points during this period.

St. George had a strong finish to the game when the score blew out somewhat, aided by some of their backs which turned on the afterburners.

Half time score: 22-12
Full time score: 62-28

We wish Swindon's injured player a good recovery and thank the club for travelling over to Melksham hopefully it is not too long before a return fixture 👀...

After launching the Rugby League offer in May and successfully hosting an inaugural game in June earlier this month with Somerset Vikings RLFC which they were kind enough to come out of hibernation for 👏

We are back in mixed training this evening:

Only one training session to prepare for the next fixture and battle of Wiltshire with Swindon St George (Wednesday 16th July, kick off 7pm, Oakfield Stadium, Melksham) get down to brush up on your Rugby League skills, new players and all abilities welcome aged 17+, play the ball is a key skill to practice if you are converting from Rugby Union. Rugby League is great for fitness and core skills ahead of the union season.
